A middle names generator sorted by sound

Choose One syllable, Two syllables or Three or more syllables in the menu under the button: 34, 134 and 87 names. There is no rule, so try varying the lengths: a short middle name after a long first name, as in Elizabeth Grace, and a long one after a short first name, as in Jack Alexander.

Where the stress falls

A card says which syllable is stressed. 129 of the 134 two-syllable names stress the first; 5 stress the second, Nadine, Pierre, Raquel and Yvette among them. It also gives the name's births in 2025.

Tips
  • As a middle name generator male names are under Boys' names in More filters: 123 of the 255.
  • Three names stress the last of three syllables: Adrienne, Bernadette, Marianne.

Questions and answers

What are the most common middle names?

No official list exists. The Social Security Administration counts first names only, so nothing on this page says how common a name is as a middle name. These are first names, sorted by syllables so the sound can be tried.

How many syllables should a middle name have?

There is no rule. This page holds 34 names of one syllable, 134 of two and 87 of three or more, so each length can be tried after a first name.

Where do the syllables and the stress come from?

From the Carnegie Mellon University Pronouncing Dictionary, an American English dictionary. A name is listed only when its English Wiktionary entry gives the same number of syllables and the same stress. Other languages say some of these names differently.

Why is a name I know missing?

The list keeps the 120 most given names whose two dictionary entries agree. Below those it holds only names that this site's girl, boy and book character name pages do not: names given to at least 100 girls or 100 boys in 2025.

How this list was compiled: A list by a written rule, built on 3 October 2026. The names and their births come from the US Social Security Administration's national baby names file (names.zip, linked from https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/limits.html), which lists first names given to five or more children of a sex in a year; ssa.gov refuses scripted downloads, so the official file was read from the Internet Archive's copy captured 2026-09-18 (https://web.archive.org/web/20260918154125/https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/names.zip, files for 1880 to 2025). The administration records first names only: nothing here says a name is common as a middle name. The syllables and the stressed syllable are those of the first pronunciation listed for the spelling in the Carnegie Mellon University Pronouncing Dictionary (http://www.speech.cs.cmu.edu/cgi-bin/cmudict, read the same day), an American English dictionary. A name is listed only when a second reference agrees: its English given-name entry on English Wiktionary (https://en.wiktionary.org, CC BY-SA 4.0, read the same day) has a written pronunciation with the same number of syllables and the same stressed syllable; each card carries that entry's address. Of 984 names tried, 471 agree, 20 differ and 493 have no entry, no given-name sense or no written pronunciation there. From the names that agree the list takes the 120 with the most births in 2025, girls and boys together (down to 3,864 births), and below them every name given to at least 100 girls or 100 boys in 2025 that this site's girl name page, boy name page and book character name page do not hold, less 16 names left for smaller name lists of this site that already hold them: 135 more. Said and Isis were taken out by hand, and Ishmael because its dictionary entry gives a three-syllable reading first. A card says 'girls and boys' when at least 50 of each were given the name in 2025 and the smaller group is at least 10 in 100 of its births; otherwise it names the sex with more births. Other languages say some of these names differently; the card gives the American English reading only. Licence: Births: public domain, a work of the US federal government (17 U.S.C. 105).
