Random French Name Generator

How this list was compiled: Given names: Insee, the French national statistics institute, 'Fichier des prénoms' (https://www.insee.fr/fr/statistiques/8595130, national file prenoms-2025-nat.csv, read 2026-09-30), which counts the first names given to children born in France from 1900 to 2025 from the civil register and gives each name's rank within its sex and year. A name is listed if it is in the top 100 for its sex among children born in 2025, or was in the top 10 for its sex in some birth year from 1900 to 2025. A card gives the band of the 2025 rank (top 10, top 50, top 100) and the decades in which the name reached a yearly top 10 (at least one birth year in the decade); ranks and numbers of births are not printed, though the license would allow it, so that this page reads like the other name pages of the family. Insee prints names in capitals with their accents; the cards use ordinary capitalization. Sex is the file's column. Family names: Insee, 'Fichier des noms de famille' (https://www.insee.fr/fr/statistiques/3536630, national file noms2008nat_txt.txt, read 2026-09-30), births by family name in France by decade from 1891 to 2000. Listed: the 150 names with the most births over the whole period, each with a band by that total (top 10, top 50, top 100, top 150). The file prints names in capitals without accents. An accent is put back on 14 names (André (family name), Benoît, Carré, Clément (family name), François, Gérard (family name), Guérin, Hervé, Lefèvre, Léger, Ménard, Noël, Prévost, Rivière) where French Wikipedia's 'Liste des noms de famille les plus courants en France' (https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_des_noms_de_famille_les_plus_courants_en_France, read 2026-09-30) links the name to an article spelled with one; that article notes that the statistics do not tell accented variants apart, so the accent shows the usual spelling and not a separate count. 3 family names are written in two words (Da Silva, Le Gall, Le Roux). 32 spellings sit on two lists and are marked in brackets. x.type is what the Name type row filters on (family, family-50, family-10, girl, boy); x.era is what the birth-year row filters on (top100-2025 and six spans of years) and family cards carry none, because the family file has no ranks by year; x.ascii drops accents for sorting. Counted from this file: 480 cards, 150 family names, 173 girls' names and 157 boys' names; 200 cards are in a 2025 top 100. No meanings are printed: Insee records none.
