The page opens on the 50 most common. The dropdown under the button, Place in the census, keeps the 10 most common, the 50, the 100 or all 300. The order is the 2021 census count as Wikipedia's list of common surnames in Croatia reports it; no figures are printed.

Endings and roots

With All 300 names chosen, Ending under More filters keeps the 92 names in -ović or -ević, the 149 in -ić alone, the 14 in -ac, -ak, -ec or -ek or the 45 others, such as Horvat and Kos. Built on keeps the 55 built on a first name or the 25 on a trade, a people or a word.

Horvat, from an older form of Hrvat, the word for a Croat. Kovačević, Babić, Marić, Jurić, Novak, Kovačić, Knežević, Vuković and Matić follow it in the 2021 census.

Why do Croatian last names end in -ić?

Wikipedia's article on Croatian names gives five origins: a parent's first name (Anić, Blažević), a trade (Kovač, a blacksmith; Lončar, a potter), a nickname, a place and a people (Horvat, a Croat).

Are Croatian and Serbian last names the same?

Many are shared. Of these 300 names, 82 also stand on this site's Serbian list, Kovačević, Marković and Petrović among them. Horvat, Novak and Jurić are on the Croatian list only.

When did Croatians get last names?

Family names started to appear among Croats in the 12th century, says Wikipedia's article on Croatian names. From the 16th century, both the given name and the family name were written down.

How this list was compiled

Built on 3 October 2026 from public pages read that day. One: English Wikipedia's 'List of common surnames in Croatia' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_common_surnames_in_Croatia, CC BY-SA 4.0), which gives 500 surnames with the number of residents carrying each in the 2021 census of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics (https://web.dzs.hr/Hrv/censuses/census2021/results/censusnames.htm). The 300 with the highest 2021 figure are listed. No figure is printed: a card says only which band the name stands in (among the 10 most common, the 50, the 100, or places 101 to 300). Two: English Wiktionary's Serbo-Croatian surname entries (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:Serbo-Croatian_surnames, CC BY-SA 4.0): where the entry's etymology names the first name or word a surname is built on, the card gives it with the entry's gloss, or the first sense of that word's own entry. Three: for names the dictionary does not explain, the derivation column of the Croatia table in English Wikipedia's 'List of most common surnames in European countries' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_common_surnames_in_European_countries#Croatia), in its own words. The Ending row goes by spelling, except that Jović stands under -ić alone because its card names that ending. 80 cards carry a root (55 built on a first name, 25 on a trade, a people or a word) and 220 carry none, because neither source gives one or because the only root given is a religious title or a word for a bodily trait. A root is what a dictionary or encyclopedia records for the surname in general, not for any family. Many of these surnames are also carried in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro: 82 of the 300 stand on this site's Serbian list in the same spelling. 100 of the 300 (33.3 in 100) stand on another list of this site (counted on 3 October 2026; the site's cap is 40). The census order is the Croatian Bureau of Statistics', as Wikipedia reports it, used only to sort names into bands. The selection, the sorting and the wording of the cards are our own work.
