What Hungarian last names mean
Most are everyday Hungarian words. The dropdown, Kind, keeps the 36 trades (Molnár, miller; Takács, weaver), the 13 names of peoples (Horváth, Croatian; Németh, German), the 39 looks, traits and other words (Fekete, black), the 49 first names used as family names, or the 33 place names with the ending -i.
The 100 commonest, in three bands
Under More filters, Place in the count keeps the 10 commonest names, places 11 to 50 or places 51 to 100 of the register of 1 January 2026. In Hungary the family name is written first, before the given name.
Tips
A card prints the spelling without accents where it differs: Kovács, Kovacs.
20 of the 100 commonest have no origin to print; their cards give the place in the count alone.
Questions and answers
What is the most common Hungarian last name?
Nagy, which means big or great. Kovács, Tóth, Szabó and Horváth follow it in the Interior Ministry's count of birth family names in the register on 1 January 2026.
What do Hungarian last names mean?
Most are plain words: a trade (Kovács, smith; Szabó, tailor), a people (Tóth, Slovak; Horváth, Croatian), a look (Kiss, small; Fekete, black), a father's first name (Balázs, Simon) or a place name with -i.
Why do so many Hungarian last names end in -i?
The ending -i makes a word that means of or from a place. The dictionary gives Szilágyi as from Szilágy, Budai as from Buda and Debreceni as from Debrecen.
Does the last name come first in Hungary?
Yes. In Hungarian the family name is written before the given name, so Kovács comes first and the first name follows. Texts in English usually turn the order around.

How this list was compiled
Two public sources, read on 2 October 2026. One: the Hungarian Ministry of the Interior's table of the 100 most frequent birth family names in the population register on 1 January 2026 (Belügyminisztérium, 'Születési családnevek 2026', https://cdn.kormany.hu/uploads/document/a/ab/abb/abb23fee88bca655a7148ed448b50298bb0e5fa6.xlsx, the file Wikipedia's list of most common surnames in European countries cites for Hungary). All 100 names of that table are listed, in the spelling of the register, and a card says which band a name stands in (the 10 commonest, places 11 to 50, places 51 to 100); no figure is printed. Two spellings that the register counts apart (Kis and Kiss, Pap and Papp, Szűcs and Szücs, Hegedűs and Hegedüs, Balogh and Balog) are two cards. Two: English Wiktionary's category of Hungarian surnames (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:Hungarian_surnames, CC BY-SA 4.0). A name outside the 100 is listed only when its entry there, or the entry of the Hungarian word spelled the same, gives a meaning: 90 such names. A card's meaning is the etymology of the surname's entry, cut to its first clause, or 'As a word, ...' with the first sense of the Hungarian word of the same spelling, or the note that the name is also a man's first name where the entry lists one; 170 cards carry such a line and 20 cards of the 100 commonest carry none: the dictionary gives none, or for one name only a sense about drink. For Papp the gloss is the one on English Wikipedia's page for the surname (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papp), and the card says so. Glosses about drink and a few wrong or unkind senses were left off. The kind a name is sorted under (a trade, a people, a look or trait, a father's first name, a place name with -i) is our own sorting from that line. An origin is what a dictionary records for the surname in general, not for any one family. Names tied to one famous person (composers, noble houses, a poet, a minister in office) were left out. That the family name is written first in Hungary was checked on Wikipedia's article 'Hungarian name' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hungarian_name). Counted on 2 October 2026: 36 of 190 names (18.9 in 100) also stand in another list of this site. Every card that states a meaning keeps the address of the page it was read on. Licence: The register table is a publication of the Hungarian Ministry of the Interior; only the order of the names is used, as bands, with credit. Meanings draw on English Wiktionary, CC BY-SA 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/). The sorting into kinds and the wording of the cards are our own work.
