    Centaur Name of the day

    How it works

This centaur name generator joins a made-up opening to an ending in the shape of Greek names, then adds a byname from the herd, such as Dexarandra Swift-over-Stone.

    Read the full guide

Three parts, joined as you press

Press New centaur name. Press until the name ends in -andra or -ippe for a mare, or keep one byname and press for a whole herd. Bynames are a deed, a habit or a home pasture: Far-Leaper, Swift-over-Stone.

    The horse in the name

Two endings are real Greek. The names Philippos and Xanthippe are built on hippos, the Ancient Greek word for horse, so -ippos and -ippe put a horse inside the name, as in Ioramippe. The other endings are there for their sound.

    Questions and answers

Who are the centaurs of Greek myth?

Chiron was held to be the wisest and justest of all the centaurs, and Pholus was a wise centaur and friend of Heracles. Nessus and Eurytion are two more. This page deals none of them: every name here is made up.

    What is a centaur?

A creature from Greek mythology with the upper body of a human and the lower body and legs of a horse. The myths place the centaurs in the mountains of Thessaly.

    Are these real Greek names?

They are made up, and each was checked against Wikipedia's lists of Greek deities, minor mythological figures and creatures and the Greek name lists on this site. Greek names were built from such parts, so a result could still be an old name.

How this list was compiled: Our own list of 56 openings in the sound of Greek names, written on 2026-10-02. They are made-up syllables and carry no meaning. Every opening was joined to every ending by script, and each whole name was checked that day against the names in the English Wikipedia articles Centaur, Lapiths, List of Greek deities, List of minor Greek mythological figures and List of Greek mythological creatures; English Wikipedia page titles (https://en.wikipedia.org/, CC BY-SA 4.0); every list on this site, the Greek name lists among them; an English dictionary and lists of real first names, surnames and places; a rude-word list; every word of every page title of 16 fantasy fan wikis; and exact page titles on 12 fantasy fan wikis (lotr.fandom.com, forgottenrealms.fandom.com, elderscrolls.fandom.com, witcher.fandom.com, dragonage.fandom.com, gameofthrones.fandom.com, wot.fandom.com, harrypotter.fandom.com, wowpedia.fandom.com, pathfinder.fandom.com, criticalrole.fandom.com, zelda.fandom.com). 23 candidates were cut (13 a name from published fiction, or one letter from it; 4 a Wikipedia page title; 3 on another list of this site; 2 a dictionary word; 1 a real first name or surname), among them Kyther, Agath, Gorym, Lampyr, Akrath, Kerad. Greek names were built from parts like these, so a result can still be a real old name that the lists do not hold. Checked again on 2026-10-03: every opening with every ending was looked up as an English Wikipedia page title (none is one), and the opening Nyxar was cut because an island name page of this site uses it. How this list was compiled: 24 endings in the shape of Ancient Greek names. Two carry a checked meaning: -ippos and -ippe are built on hippos (ἵππος), "horse", as the real names Philippos and Xanthippe are (English Wiktionary entries ἵππος, Φίλιππος and Ξανθίππη, https://en.wiktionary.org/, read on 2026-10-03, CC BY-SA 4.0). The other endings are given for their sound only. Nothing was cut. Licence: own selection and wording; meanings from English Wiktionary (CC BY-SA 4.0)
