Press, then keep what fits
Press New city name. Four rows fill: Name, Kind, Designator and Skyline. Tap a row to lock it and press again for the rest. Lock Kind on Arcology to name a string of tower cities, or lock a name and try it as a dome, a ring and a station.
Kinds that are real ideas
An arcology is a whole city in one giant building; the word was coined in 1969. A seastead is a permanent home at sea. A megacity is a real one of more than 10 million people. The list under the tool has a checked line for each, and marks the kinds that are our own.
Tips
- A designator reads as a district. Keep the name and kind, and reroll it to map a whole city.
- Names ending in -port, -haven and -plex sound built. The others sound older than the city.
Questions and answers
What is a good name for a futuristic city?
A short invented name with a hard x, v or z, followed by what the place is: an arcology, a ring, a dome. A designator such as Ring C makes it sound like one part of something larger.
What is an arcology?
An arcology, or vertical city, is a hypothetical megastructure with a very dense population that aims to supply itself. The word joins architecture and ecology and was coined in 1969.
Could a city be built under a dome?
A domed city is a hypothetical structure: a large urban area under a single roof, in most descriptions airtight and pressurized. Domed cities have been a fixture of science fiction since the early 20th century.
Are the names from a film or a game?
No. Every name was made up for this page and searched as a Wikipedia title and on science-fiction fan wikis; matches were dropped. No list of fiction is complete, so search a name before you publish it.
