    Questions and answers

Is this an emo name generator?

It can be used as one. Emo is a genre of rock music known for emotional lyrics, and the names here are dark in mood, not sad: night, storm, thorn and ash.

Are the first names real names?

Yes. Each one is in the Social Security name data for the United States, which lists a name once five babies in a year are given it. Some, like Ivy and Luna, are common; others are rare.

    Are the surnames real?

No. Each is two plain words joined, such as Cinderfell. A script dropped any that turned out to be a dictionary word, a surname in the 2010 Census, a place or a Wikipedia page title.

Can I use a name for a character or a handle?

Yes: the names are for original characters, stories and usernames. This page cannot check whether a handle is taken, and a pair can still match a name somebody already uses.

How this list was compiled: Our own list of 66 made-up surnames in four moods, each with a line written for this page on 2026-10-02. That day a script dropped any that is an English dictionary word, a surname in the 2010 Census, a real place, an item on another list of this site, a name from a short list of famous fantasy names, an English Wikipedia page title or a page title on one of three fan-made encyclopedias of fantasy books and games, and looked up every first name and surname pair as an English Wikipedia page title.
