Dark Elf Name of the day

    How it works

This dark elf name generator joins a sharp opening to a short ending, then adds a home under the ground such as the Flowstone Stair. Every home is named for a real cave feature, explained in the list.

    Read the full guide

Press for a name, then choose the home

Press New dark elf name. Lock the home with a tap to name a whole household, or lock an opening to name a line of kin.

    Homes named for real caves

Flowstone is a sheet of calcite laid down where water flows over a cave wall. A sump is a passage that is under water. Moonmilk, helictites and cave pearls are real too. The list under the tool has a checked line for each.

    Tips
    • Lock a water home, such as the Sump Gate, for a house that guards the only way in.
    • Hard sounds suit a short name. Try yours in a whisper.

    Questions and answers

    What is a dark elf?

In Norse mythology the Dökkálfar, or dark elves, dwell within the earth, as the Prose Edda tells it. Fantasy games and stories built their underground elves on that idea. No one game or story is the model here.

How do you make up a dark elf name?

Start on a hard consonant, keep it to two syllables and end on a hiss or a stop. Then say where the elf lives. Raskith of the Flowstone Stair is made that way.

Are these names from a game or a book?

No. Both halves were written for this page, and the word one well-known game uses for its dark elves is not here. Every name the rows can spell was searched on Wikipedia and on fantasy fan wikis.

    Are the cave features real?

Yes. Flowstone, moonmilk, helictites, cave pearls, sumps and the rest are real features of caves, and each line was checked against its Wikipedia article.

How this list was compiled: Our own list of 46 sharp openings, capitalized because each starts the name. None is an opening of the elf, high elf or wood elf name pages of this site. How this list was compiled: Our own list of 24 short endings, each with our own note on how to say it. None is an ending of the elf, high elf or wood elf name pages of this site. The screen is described in the Opening row's source. Six candidates that begin on a consonant were cut on a second reading (kha, vra, rin, mor, vash, zin), so every ending begins on a vowel sound and joins cleanly to an opening that ends on a consonant. How this list was compiled: Our own list of 36 invented homes under the ground, each named for a real feature of caves. The line on each feature was checked against its English Wikipedia article on 2026-10-02 (linked on each line; CC BY-SA 4.0); the wording is ours. Each home was searched that day as a GeoNames place, an English Wikipedia page title and a page title of 16 fantasy fan wikis. Nothing was cut. Licence: own work
