    How it works

This hippie name generator pairs a first name from nature or the sky, such as Sunshine, River or Meadow, with a made-up family name of two gentle words, as in Sunshine Moonflower. It suits name tags for a 1960s party.

    Questions and answers

What is a good hippie name?

A word from outdoors used as a first name, such as Meadow, River or Sunshine, with a family name in the same mood, such as Moonflower. Press until the two halves sound right together.

Were hippie names really given to babies?

Some were. In the Social Security name file, which lists a name once five babies in a year receive it, Rainbow, River, Leaf and Ocean all first appear in 1971, and Autumn entered the top 1,000 girls' names in 1969.

Are the family names real surnames?

They are made up for this page by joining two plain words, and a script checked that none is on the 2020 Census list of United States surnames. A few, such as Starbrook, are real surnames elsewhere, and Moonflower is also a real plant.

Can I use the names for a party or a story?

Yes. The list was written for name tags at a 1960s party, for costumes and for characters. Nothing on it is about drugs or anything else unfit for a family party.

How this list was compiled: 99 first names in two groups. The first is our own choice of nature and sky words, each with a line written for this page on 2026-10-03. The second holds names whose record in the national name data of the United States Social Security Administration turns between 1967 and 1979: the line gives the year the name first appears in the file, entered the top 1,000, or was most given, worked out by script on 2026-10-03 from the national file names.zip (https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/limits.html, public domain, read through its Internet Archive copy; the file runs from 1880 and lists a name in a year only when at least five babies of one sex were given it). 17 candidates were left off after the checks, 12 of them plain given names (Willow, Sage, Fern and the like) that the list of nature names on this site holds, so that no more than 40 in 100 of this row stand on it. How this list was compiled: Our own list of 82 family names, each two gentle words joined, with a line written for this page on 2026-10-03. None is on the 2020 Census list of United States surnames, which a script checked that day. Each was also searched in the full text of English Wikipedia: a few are real surnames outside that list (Starbrook, Silverbrook, Mossbrook), and many are also the name of a plant, a place, a song or a firm (a moonflower is a flower). 21 candidates were left off after the checks, among them Morningsong and every name ending in feather: names of that kind belong to Native American people, and the search found three of them in use as a real person's name.
