Questions and answers
What are some ancient Egyptian names?
Amenhotep, Ramesses, Imhotep and Sobekhotep for men, and Nefertari, Meresankh, Hetepheres and Ankhesenamun for women. Every name here has an entry as an Egyptian given name in English Wiktionary, which is where its transliteration and meaning come from.
What do ancient Egyptian names mean?
Many are whole sentences. Amenhotep says "Amun is satisfied", Neferhotep "the beautiful one is content" and Meresankh "she loves life". Others are a short phrase, as Siptah is: "son of Ptah".
How many names did a pharaoh have?
Five, in the full royal titulary, which was standard from the Middle Kingdom. The last was the personal name, the one given at birth. The mark on these cards shows only that a ruler on the list of pharaohs carried the name.

This page lists names of ancient Egypt only, taken from dictionary entries for the ancient Egyptian language. Names given in Egypt today are a different list and are not on this page.

How this list was compiled: A list by a written rule, built on 2 October 2026. A name is listed when English Wiktionary's category 'Egyptian given names' (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:Egyptian_given_names, 172 entries that day, with its lists for men and for women) holds an entry for it, the entry gives the name's usual English form, and its etymology states what the name says or gives the meaning of each word it is built from. The transliteration on each card is the entry's title, in the scholars' spelling; the meaning is the entry's own wording, the sentence or phrase its etymology gives after 'thus' or 'literally' (for Tutankhamon the meaning its name line gives, and for Tutankhaten the literal meaning that the Tutankhamon entry gives for it); where the entry gives only the parts (Neferthenut and Merneptah) the card prints them joined by a plus sign. Nayfaurud carries both readings its entry calls plausible. Left out: 14 names of foreign rulers that were only written in Egyptian (Greek, Persian and Latin names), 29 entries with no English form, 30 with no stated meaning, 6 whose meaning the entry calls uncertain, and 7 whose English form is two words. The mark 'Borne by a pharaoh' is set when the name stands in a ruler's name cell on English Wikipedia's 'List of pharaohs' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_pharaohs, read the same day; Amun, Amon and Amen count as one spelling), when the dictionary entry itself says the name was a pharaoh's (Tutankhaten among them), or when the opening of English Wikipedia's article on a ruler of that list gives the name as the ruler's (Neferusobek in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sobekneferu, Nayfaurud in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nepherites_I): 36 of the 81 cards. Nitocris carries no mark, because the list and the dictionary entry both doubt that a pharaoh bore the name. A card without the mark is not a statement that no ruler bore the name. In the row 'Names a god', the Two Ladies of Meretnebty count as goddesses (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two_Ladies) and Onuphrius, which its entry calls an epithet of Osiris, counts as a god's name. A card names a name, not a person. 51 names given to men and 30 given to women. Licence: English Wiktionary and English Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/).
