Inn Name Generator

One press names an inn: its kind, where it stands, the price of a bed and tonight's supper.

The Homebound Trencher, a boarding house on the old king's road. A bed costs three coppers and a song. Tonight's supper: onion soup under a crust of cheese.

Padlock: keep a part. Arrows: change only that part.

    Inn of the day

    How it works

This inn name generator sets up a whole inn for a story or a game table: a sign such as The Weary Wayfarer, a real kind of lodging house, where it stands, the price of a bed and tonight's supper.

    Read the full guide

Keep the sign, change the rest

Press New inn name. When the sign is right, tap its two words to lock them, then press again for a new place, price and supper. As a random inn name generator for a long road, Print 20 inns gives one for every night.

Kinds of inn that were real

The third row holds real kinds of lodging house, each explained under the tool. A caravanserai gave lodging to travelers, merchants and caravans; a mansio was an official stopping place on a Roman road; a coaching inn rested coach travelers and their horses.

    Tips
    • The best fantasy inn names can be drawn: every noun here is something a sign painter could paint.
    • Lock the kind of lodging and print 20 for a chain of posting stations along one road.

    Questions and answers

What is the difference between an inn and a tavern?

An inn is a place where travelers find lodging and usually a meal. A tavern is a gathering place, and in the past many also gave travelers a bed. This page is about beds: every result has a price for the night and a supper.

Can I use these as fantasy tavern names?

Yes. The signs follow the old pattern of The, a describing word and a thing, so The Drowsy Peddler or The Wayward Coachman hangs as well over a tavern door as over an inn.

Does it work as an rpg tavern name generator at the table?

Yes. Read the whole line aloud when the party arrives: the sign, the place, the price of a bed and what is cooking. Nothing follows one game's rules.

Are these the names of real or famous inns?

Every sign was searched, with and without The, as a Wikipedia page title and on fantasy fan wikis, and the words that made a taken name were cut. Nothing is checked against real businesses.

How this list was compiled: Our own list of 66 adjectives for the first word of an inn sign, after The, written on 2026-10-02 about travelers, weather and the road. Every one of the 3,960 signs the two sign rows can spell was built by script and screened that day: with and without "The" as an English Wikipedia page title, as an exact page title on 5 fantasy fan wikis (lotr.fandom.com, forgottenrealms.fandom.com, elderscrolls.fandom.com, harrypotter.fandom.com, witcher.fandom.com), against the famous inns of published fantasy, and with a rude-word list read across the words (https://github.com/LDNOOBW/List-of-Dirty-Naughty-Obscene-and-Otherwise-Bad-Words). A word that made a taken sign was cut.
