Random Landscape Generator

One press composes a view to paint, sketch or write: a real landform, its light and one focal point.

An escarpment under a dust-colored sky before wind. In the foreground, wildflowers in three colors, with a narrow channel cut deep in soft earth; the eye rests on a small white bell tower.

Padlock: keep a part. Arrows: change only that part.

    Landscape of the day

    How it works

This random landscape generator composes one view in five parts: a real landform, the sky and light, the ground in front of you, water and one focal point. It doubles as a random scenery generator for maps and stories.

    Read the full guide

Keep the landform, change the light

Press New landscape. Tap a part to lock it or change it alone: lock Landform on the line of sea stacks and press again for a new sky. Set a timer times a sketch, starting at 20 minutes. Print 20 landscapes makes a sheet of prompts.

Why the landform is always a real one

Every landform is a term from physical geography, and the list under the tool gives each a one-line meaning checked against its Wikipedia article: a tombolo ties an island to the mainland, a cuesta is steep on one side only. The other four rows describe only the sky and the ground near you, so any landform can take any of them.

    Tips
    • Block in the landform as one big shape before any detail.
    • Look up a photograph of the landform before you draw it.

    Questions and answers

What can I use a random landscape for?

A timed sketch, a painting study, a map or game level to build, or a scene to write. The five parts give you the big shape, the light, the foreground and one thing for the eye to settle on.

    Are the landforms real?

Yes. Each one is listed in the Wikipedia glossary of landforms, such as a drumlin, a hogback or a maar, and its meaning comes from its own article. The sky, ground cover, water and focal point are our own lines.

What is the difference between a mesa and a butte?

Both are isolated hills with steep sides and a flat top. A mesa is the larger, standing above the plain like a table; a butte has only a small flat top and is the smaller landform.

How this list was compiled: The tool composes one view from five rows (landform, sky and light, ground cover, water, focal point) and cannot block a combination, so every line in this row was written to sit beside every line in the other four. Every item is a real landform listed in the English Wikipedia Glossary of landforms (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_of_landforms, read 2026-09-30), and the one-line meaning under it is cut down from the opening of that landform's own Wikipedia article, fetched the same day: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stack_(geology), https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tombolo, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spit_(landform), https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fjord, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_arch, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagoon, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headland, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barrier_island, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ria, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raised_beach, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wave-cut_platform, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cove, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt_marsh, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Braided_river, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxbow_lake, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meander, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_delta, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alluvial_fan, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canyon, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterfall, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floodplain, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wadi, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confluence, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drumlin, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cirque, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arête, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U-shaped_valley, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moraine, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esker, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kettle_(landform), https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roche_moutonnée, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outwash_plain, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcanic_crater_lake, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caldera, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinder_cone, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lava_field, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maar, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shield_volcano, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stratovolcano, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuya, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesa, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butte, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barchan, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yardang, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dry_lake, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoodoo_(geology), https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inselberg, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Badlands, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinkhole, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limestone_pavement, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polje, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuesta, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escarpment, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tor_(rock_formation), https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scree, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plateau, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hogback_(geology), https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cenote, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glen, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountain_pass. Left out: landforms tied to one climate (atoll, nunatak, pingo, mogote, sand sea), because the foreground rows are written for any climate; the landforms we wanted that the glossary does not list by that name (tidal flats, tarn, water gap, glacial erratic, fell); and estuary, which is an item of random-biome-generator. The plain words fjord, lagoon, cove, canyon, waterfall, moraine, esker, mesa, glen and ria also stand in word and name lists of this site, where they are words and not landforms with a meaning.
