What makes a color muted
In color theory a tone is a color mixed with gray, and mixing a color with any neutral lowers its chroma, its colorfulness. That is what muted means here: every color in these schemes is a tone or a pale tint with a low-chroma code, and none is at full strength.
The natural colors
The earth neutrals are the most natural of them. Beige takes its name from the French word for wool left undyed and unbleached, and ecru is French for raw or unbleached, first the color of linen left that way. Tan, camel, khaki and umber sit beside them.
