    How it works

This nation name generator makes a country for a map or a story: a real form of state, an invented name with the word for its people, and a capital. It is a random nation name generator for any world.

    Read the full guide

Name one nation or a whole map

Press New nation name. Tap a part to lock it, then press again. Lock the form on Federation or Confederation for a space nation name generator; lock it on Principality or Grand Duchy for a fantasy nation name generator. Locked on one nation, the last row is a capital name generator.

The forms of state are real

A republic is a state in which political power rests with the public. A confederation is a union of sovereign states joined for common action. A condominium is a territory that two or more powers rule jointly. The list under the tool explains every form.

    Tips
    • For fantasy nation names or fantasy country names alone, read the Name row in the list under the tool.
    • As a federation name generator, lock the form on Federation and press for names.

    Questions and answers

How do you make up a name for a nation?

Start with a sound and close it the way real countries close: -ia, -land, -mark, -ova. Then make the word for its people from the name, as Averonia gives Averonians, and choose a capital.

What is the word for the people of a country called?

A demonym. It is usually made from the name of the place: Averonia gives Averonians and Brinland gives Brinlanders. Every name here comes with its own.

What is the difference between a federation and a confederation?

A federation is a union of partly self-governing states or provinces under one federal government. A confederation is looser: a union of sovereign states that join for common action, usually by treaty.

    Are these real countries?

No. Every name was checked against lists of today's and former states, place tables and a full-text search of Wikipedia, and any that turned up was removed. The forms of state are real. Search a name before you publish it.
