Where the word paladin comes from

The first paladins were the Twelve Peers, twelve legendary knights of Charlemagne's court. The Song of Roland lists them, with Roland and Oliver first. The word goes back to Latin palatinus, a palace officer.

    Tips
    • It is a female paladin name generator with the honorific locked on Dame, Lady or Sister; press past the Twelve Peers, who were men.

    Questions and answers

What is a good name for a paladin?

A good paladin name has three parts: a name that is easy to say, an epithet others gave them and a vow they keep. Dame Haldrey the Steadfast, sworn to guard one road until the snow closes it, is made that way.

    What is a paladin?

In legend, the paladins were the Twelve Peers, the foremost knights of Charlemagne's court. Today the word means a heroic champion, especially a knight, and many games use it for a knight bound by an oath.

    Who were the Twelve Peers?

The Song of Roland lists them as Roland, Oliver, Gérin, Gérier, Bérengier, Otton, Samson, Engelier, Ivon, Ivoire, Anséis and Girard. Other tales name other knights, but there are always twelve.

Are these names from a game?

No. The made-up names and epithets were searched as page titles on Wikipedia and fantasy fan wikis. A match was cut unless it was a plain word such as the Steadfast. No game or published order is named. The vows are our own.

How this list was compiled: Our own list of 50 epithets for a sworn knight, written on 2026-10-02. Each was searched that day as an exact page title on English Wikipedia and on the same fan wikis as the names, and checked against every list on this site. 10 candidates were cut (4 on another list of this site; 3 a fan wiki page title; 3 a Wikipedia page title), among them the Unbowed, the Patient, the Unhurried, the Lantern-Bearer, the Listener, the Peacemaker. Eight plain words stayed although Wikipedia has a page of that title, because the page is about the word itself: the Steadfast, the Gentle, the Humble, the Mild, the Forgiving, the Trusted, the Barefoot and the Mender.
