This fantasy house name generator joins one of 54 invented family names to one of 48 sigils, for 2,592 noble houses. Under each sigil in the lists below is the same coat of arms in heraldic terms.

    Build a realm's great houses

Press once for each house at your court and lock the ones you keep. A realm reads well when its houses differ in both name and colors: a silver heron on black for the marsh lords, a silver tower on green for the capital.

Why the sigils look like real heraldry

Every sigil keeps heraldry's rule of tincture: a metal, silver or gold, on a color, or a color on a metal, never two metals or two colors together. The contrast keeps each one clear, and each can be written as a real blazon.

    Questions and answers

How do you write a coat of arms?

Name the field first, then the charge and its tincture: Sable, a heron argent means a silver heron on black. Each sigil's line in the list below gives its blazon, without the beast's pose that full heraldry adds.

Are any of these real family names?

They were checked against every Wikipedia title, place names and a dictionary, and 16 that matched a real name or word, such as Hollister and Calloway, were dropped. A rare surname can still exist somewhere.

Can I use these houses in my book or game?

Yes, they are free to use. The screening cannot be complete, and trade marks were not searched, so search a name before you publish it.

How this list was compiled: Own list of 54 invented family names for noble houses. Every name was screened by script on 2026-09-23 and dropped on any hit: the 403 words of the LDNOOBW English list (https://github.com/LDNOOBW/List-of-Dirty-Naughty-Obscene-and-Otherwise-Bad-Words) and about 90 more, read inside the name; the GeoNames cities15000 table with alternate names (https://download.geonames.org/export/dump/cities15000.zip); an English dictionary; every word of 48 English Wikipedia articles on fantasy and historical-fantasy settings with noble houses, among them A Song of Ice and Fire, Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon with their character lists and House Stark, Lannister and Targaryen, Dune, The Wheel of Time, The Stormlight Archive, Mistborn, The Witcher, Dragon Age, Crusader Kings, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Legend of the Five Rings, Arcane, Shadow and Bone and Red Rising; and every English Wikipedia page title, alone and with "House" in front. Sixteen names were written and then removed, among them Hollister, Calloway and Tollemache (real family or place names with Wikipedia pages) and Falconer and Sallow (English words); Estrevan was cut as too close to a character in The Left Hand of Darkness. How this list was compiled: Own list of 48 sigils, each a device on a field in plain English, with the same arms in heraldic blazon under it. Every sigil follows the heraldic rule of tincture: a metal (silver or gold) on a color, or a color on a metal, never metal on metal or color on color, for the sake of contrast (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_of_tincture). The blazon uses the standard tinctures: argent for silver, or for gold, sable for black, gules for red, azure for blue, vert for green and purpure for purple (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tincture_(heraldry)), both read 2026-09-23. The blazons are simplified: real blazon gives a beast's pose, such as rampant or passant, which is left out here. No sigil is the arms of a great house of A Song of Ice and Fire or Dune.
