Random German City
Five real German cities at a press, each with its state, its population and its rank.
How it works
Pick a random German city from the 300 largest of the country's 2,059, as the Federal Statistical Office counted them at the end of 2024. Kamp-Lintfort, with 38,217 people, has the same chance as Berlin.

A random place in Germany for a trip or a story
North Rhine-Westphalia has 109 of the 300, so an open draw lands there about one time in three. Choose another state to leave it: Baden-Württemberg has 46 cities on the list, Lower Saxony 32 and Bavaria 30. Saarland and Saxony-Anhalt have four each.
For a quiz on the 16 states
Four state capitals are not the largest city of their state. Düsseldorf is smaller than Cologne, Wiesbaden than Frankfurt am Main and Schwerin than Rostock, and Dresden is 46,946 people behind Leipzig.
Two Frankfurts are on the list: Frankfurt am Main in Hesse, the fifth largest city, and Frankfurt (Oder) in Brandenburg, the 159th.
Schwerin is the only state capital under 100,000 people, with 98,308 at the end of 2024.
Questions and answers
How do I get two random German cities?
Put #n=2 at the end of this page's address and each press deals a pair of cities.
How many cities are there in Germany?
2,059 places held the title of city (Stadt) on 31 December 2024, by the Federal Statistical Office's table. 80 of them had 100,000 people or more. The smallest is Arnis in Schleswig-Holstein, with 251 people.
What are the capitals of the German states?
Stuttgart, Munich, Potsdam, Bremen, Wiesbaden, Schwerin, Hanover, Düsseldorf, Mainz, Saarbrücken, Dresden, Magdeburg, Kiel and Erfurt. Berlin and Hamburg are city-states, where the city is the whole state, so the State capitals filter draws 16 cards.
Why does a card say Munich and not München?
Four cities go by the name English uses: Munich, Cologne, Nuremberg and Hanover. Their cards add the German names München, Köln, Nürnberg and Hannover. Every other city keeps its German name, umlauts included.
Does the random city generator for Germany include small towns?
No. The list stops at the 300th largest city. Germany's other 1,759 cities are smaller than Kamp-Lintfort, and a village without the title of city is not in the official table at all.

How this list was compiled: The 300 largest of Germany's 2,059 cities by population on 31 December 2024, each with its state, its population and its place among the 2,059. Names and figures are from the Federal Statistical Office's table of every German city, Städte in Deutschland nach Fläche, Bevölkerung auf Grundlage des Zensus 2022 und Bevölkerungsdichte (Statistisches Bundesamt (Destatis), 2025, Gemeindeverzeichnis: https://www.destatis.de/DE/Themen/Laender-Regionen/Regionales/Gemeindeverzeichnis/Administrativ/05-staedte.html , file 05-staedte.xlsx, read 2026-10-07). The smallest city on the list is Kamp-Lintfort with 38,217 people. The state is read from the first two digits of the table's regional key. Four cities go by their English names (Munich, Cologne, Nuremberg, Hanover) and the card adds the German one. Five names that the table shortens are written out (Weiden in der Oberpfalz, Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz, Bad Homburg vor der Höhe, Stolberg (Rheinland), Gronau (Westfalen)). Cottbus, which the table lists as Cottbus/Chóśebuz, carries its Lower Sorbian name on the card (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cottbus ). State capitals were checked against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/States_of_Germany the same day: 13 states and Bremen name a capital, and Berlin and Hamburg are city-states, which the State capitals filter counts with them to make 16.
