Questions and answers
What are the most common Turkish names?
Fatma, Ayşe, Emine, Hatice and Zeynep lead the list of women's names most used in Turkey's population register, and Mehmet, Mustafa, Ahmet, Ali and Hüseyin the men's list. English Wikipedia dates the list to 2013.
What are common Turkish last names?

Do Turkish names have meanings?
Many are everyday words. 73 cards here print the meaning the dictionary entry gives, such as Bulut, cloud, and Duygu, feeling. A card without one has an entry that gives no meaning, and none is guessed.
Are these real Turkish names?
Yes. Every given name has a Turkish given-name entry in English Wiktionary, and the family names are the register's own list. The page is a selection, read on 3 October 2026, not a count of births. Only the draw is random.

How this list was compiled: A selection by a written rule, built on 3 October 2026; it is not a count of how often names are given. Register names: the lists 'Nüfus kütüklerine kayıtlı en çok kullanılan 20 kadın ve erkek adı' and '... 20 soyadı' (the 20 most used women's and men's first names, and the 20 most used surnames, in the population registers) of the Population Statistics Department of Turkey's General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs, read from the Internet Archive: the first-name list from its copy of 14 July 2014 (https://web.archive.org/web/20140714133216/http://www.nvi.gov.tr/Files/File/Istatistikler/Isimler/en%20%C3%A7ok%20kullan%C4%B1lan%20ad.pdf), the surname list from its copy of 26 February 2015 (https://web.archive.org/web/20150226031206/http://www.nvi.gov.tr/Files/File/Istatistikler/Isimler/en%20%C3%A7ok%20kullan%C4%B1lan%20soyad.pdf). English Wikipedia's list of most popular given names dates the first-name list to 2013; the archive already held the surname file in October 2012, so a family card names no year. The lists give names in order and no numbers; a card says 'one of the 20 most used' and no place. 38 of the 40 first names are here: Zeliha and Hacer have no Turkish given-name entry in the dictionary below and are left out. No table of the Turkish Statistical Institute could be read by script, so the bands the plan asked for (top 50, top 100) are not printed. Other given names: a name is listed when (1) English Wiktionary has a Turkish given-name entry for it (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:Turkish_given_names, CC BY-SA 4.0, 1,794 entries read that day), (2) English Wikipedia has an article on the name in its categories of Turkish masculine, feminine or unisex given names (994 articles listed that day), and (3) the dictionary entry says what the name means, which language it is from, or its English form: 204 names. A meaning is printed only where the entry's etymology names a Turkish word, or the words the name is built from, with a gloss (73 cards); for four of them (Ege, Mert, Şirin, Yaman) the gloss is the one the dictionary gives in that word's own entry. Otherwise the card gives the language the entry names (149 cards, 129 of them Arabic); 20 cards carry neither a meaning nor a language: 12 register names and 8 names whose entry gives an English form only. Sex is the entry's, and for a register name the list's (Sultan, on the women's list, also has a men's entry); 33 names are given to women and men and stand under both choices. Each card carries its entry's address, and the Wikipedia article's where there is one. A card adds a spelling in plain letters (ç as c, ğ as g, ı as i, ö as o, ş as s, ü as u), made here for search and sorting. The note on the Surname Law of 21 June 1934 is from English Wikipedia's article 'Surname Law' (read the same day). No speaker of Turkish has read the list. The register lists are a Turkish government publication, credited above; only the names and their being on the list are used. The selection and the plain spellings are our own work.
