Random Greek Words With a Latin Reading and the Meaning Covered

Five random Greek words a press, each in Greek letters with a Latin reading; the meaning waits under a cover.

  1. η χημεία (i chimeía)
  2. η γραμματική (i grammatikí)
  3. εμείς (emeís)
  4. το παπούτσι (to papoútsi)
  5. η συμφωνία (i symfonía)

How it works

These random Greek words are everyday Modern Greek: nouns with their article, verbs, adjectives, greetings and small words. Each card shows the word in Greek letters with its accent and a reading in Latin letters; the English meaning is covered.

Read the full guide

Read it, then tap

Press Pick 5 new Greek words. Read each word aloud from the Latin letters, say the meaning, then tap Show meaning for the English meaning, the part of speech and a noun's gender. The Word type list under the button narrows the draw to one group.

Words English took

The last group holds Greek words that English borrowed almost unchanged: το δράμα (to dráma) is drama, η ιδέα (i idéa) is idea and το θέατρο (to théatro) is theater. Start there: you can guess most meanings before you tap.

Tips
  • The article tells the gender: ο masculine, η feminine, το neuter, as in ο ήλιος, η θάλασσα, το νερό.
  • The accent mark shows the stressed syllable, as in καλημέρα (kaliméra), good morning.

Questions and answers

Is this Modern Greek or Ancient Greek?

Modern Greek, the language spoken in Greece and Cyprus today. No ancient form is mixed in, and every word was checked against its Greek entry on English Wiktionary and on the Greek edition of Wiktionary.

How do I read the Latin letters?

They follow Wiktionary's transliteration of Greek, which keeps close to the spelling and keeps the accent: χάος is cháos and γράμμα is grámma. Treat it as a guide to the letters, and learn the sounds from a speaker.

Why does a Greek verb end in -ω?

A Greek dictionary lists a verb under its I-form of the present: γράφω (gráfo) is I write. The card gives the meaning with to, as English dictionaries do.

Where do the words and meanings come from?

The choice is ours, from no exam or course list. Every word, reading, meaning and gender comes from the word's entry on English Wiktionary, read by script, and the meanings were compared with a second dictionary.

How this list was compiled: Everyday words of Modern Greek; no ancient form is mixed in. Each word's spelling with its accent, part of speech and meaning come from its own entry on English Wiktionary (wikitext read through https://en.wiktionary.org/w/api.php on 2026-10-01, 40 titles to a request, text under CC BY-SA 4.0; the entry's address is in x.src), Greek section, and each noun's gender is the one in the entry's headword template. Verbs are in the first person singular of the present, the form dictionaries list, and adjectives in the masculine singular. The reading in Latin letters is the one Wiktionary prints for the word, produced by expanding its own Greek link template through the same API and compared, for every noun, verb and adjective, with the entry's headword line rendered the same way (all the same); it follows Wiktionary's transliteration of Greek (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wiktionary:Greek_transliteration) and keeps the accent mark. The article in front of a noun is set by script from the gender (ο masculine, η feminine, το neuter), with Wiktionary's reading of each article (o, i, to). Second sources, both by script on 2026-10-01: every word has a Greek section on the Greek-language Wiktionary (https://el.wiktionary.org), and the gender mark on the form line of each noun's first noun section there had to agree; λαγός and γιατρός, on which the two editions differ, were left out. The English meanings were compared with FreeDict's English-Greek dictionary (https://freedict.org, eng-ell 0.1.1, GNU GPL), used as a check and not as the source: the Greek word stands there under a word of our meaning for 341 of the 385 words, and 20 words are not in that dictionary. Words English took: a noun is in this group only where the English word's own Wiktionary entry names, in its etymology, an Ancient Greek word with the same letters as the modern one once accents and breathings are set aside (a final -ν apart, as in θέατρο from θέατρον); x.en holds the English word. Nouns that failed that test (ορχήστρα, κωμωδία, μηχανή and others) stay on the list as plain nouns with no such claim. The list is our own choice of everyday vocabulary and is copied from no exam body's or course's list. The English meanings are our own short wording; a script then checked that a word of each meaning stands in a definition line under the same part-of-speech heading of the entry, and words that failed were left out. Every English meaning was read for a general audience that includes children: no slang, insult, swear word, alcohol or adult term. After the file was written a script read it back and checked every row against the saved entry text again. Licence: own work
