Random Magic Item Generator

One press makes an ordinary object with a small power, a price for using it and a past.

A walnut shell on a string that keeps its holder's feet dry in any puddle. The price: it makes every clock in the house strike once. Last seen with a peddler who swore it was ordinary.

Padlock: keep a part. Arrows: change only that part.

    Magic Item of the day

    How it works

This random magic item generator builds one item in four parts: an ordinary object, what it does, the price of using it and where it came from. It is a random magical item generator for any rule system or none.

    Read the full guide

Roll an item, then keep the part you like

Tap a part to lock it or change it alone. Lock Object on the brass lantern and press New magic item until the power suits the scene. Lock The price instead and a whole hoard shares one catch. Print 20 magic items makes a treasure list.

Why every item has a price

A power with no cost ends a story, and a price starts one. Every price here is small and harmless: a holder who hiccups until sunset, an item that fails whenever it rains. No object is a weapon or a potion, which have their own pages, and nothing carries damage, rarity or a rule from any game.

    Tips
    • Tell the players the price only after the item has been used once.
    • Treat Where it came from as a lead: somebody at that ferry landing wants it back.

    Questions and answers

What are some magic item ideas for a fantasy game?

Small ones with a catch. A brass lantern that grows warm when rain is an hour away. A coil of blue rope that untangles any knot it touches, but only before breakfast. A jar of buttons that shrinks to the size of a pea.

Does it use the rules of a particular game?

No. There are no bonuses, charges, rarity grades or prices, and no item from a published game, so a result fits any system or none. For a bottle to go with it, try the random potion generator.

Why are there no magic weapons?

Weapons and potions have their own pages, so every object here is something ordinary: a kettle, a glove, a fishing net. That keeps an item useful to a character who never fights. For a blade with a past, try the random weapon generator.

How this list was compiled: An original list written for this page on 2026-09-30. The tool builds one magic item from four rows (object, what it does, the price, where it came from) and cannot block a combination, so every line in this row was written to read well beside every line in the other three. Nothing on the page is a game statistic, a rarity grade or an item named in a published game or story. Rules for this row: an ordinary thing small enough to carry in one hand, named without an article because the tool adds one. Never a weapon, a potion, a wand, a ring, a cloak or a crystal ball: weapons and potions have their own pages and the rest are the stock items of published games. Screened by script on 2026-09-30: no line repeats a line of any other list on this site or on drawthisnext, and no line, and no run of four words in a line, appears in the English Wikipedia articles Magic item, Magic item (Dungeons & Dragons), List of mythological objects and Magical objects in Harry Potter (fetched that day), beyond the everyday phrases "on top of it" and "in the hands of". Nothing on the page is a game statistic, a rarity grade or an item named in a published game or story. Rules for this row: a verb phrase that follows "that", in which "it" is the item and "its holder" is whoever carries it. A power is small, kind and useful in a story: it finds, warns, mends, carries a sound or does one small wonder. None harms, heals, hides its holder from sight or bends anyone's will, and none needs the object to have a particular shape.
