Give Me a Random ZIP Code: 150 US Codes With City, County and Map: how it works

Ask most tools to "give me a random ZIP code" and you get five bare digits. Here every code comes with its place: city, county, coordinates, land area and a dot on the state map. The draw covers 150 ZIP code areas, three in every state, and the State list narrows it to one state.

Read a random ZIP code by its first digit

The first digit marks a group of states. 0 is New England and New Jersey, 1 is New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware, and 9 is the Pacific states with Alaska and Hawaii. The First digit list filters on it. For a game, press Hide all places: each card keeps its digits and the dot on the state outline, and the room guesses the city.

Narrow the draw by state, region, largest city or state capital

Every state has exactly three codes, so Wyoming comes up as often as California. The four regions are the Census Bureau's, from 27 codes in the Northeast to 48 in the South. The largest-city and state-capital chips each leave 50 codes, and 17 codes carry both labels. A link ending in #state=wyoming opens on Wyoming.

Tips

  • Compare land on two cards. 37201 in Nashville covers 0.3 square miles. 82718 around Gillette, Wyoming covers 1,597, more than Rhode Island.
  • For map skills, read out the coordinates and have students find the place in an atlas.
  • Sort a draw of 10 from lowest to highest and trace it on a map: it usually runs from the Atlantic to the west.

Questions and answers

Is a ZIP code an area on a map?

No. The Postal Service assigns ZIP codes to delivery routes, so a code is a set of addresses, not a shape. The Census Bureau draws ZIP Code Tabulation Areas by giving each census block the code most of its addresses use, and its 2025 file lists 33,791. The Postal Service claims ZIP Code as a trademark and has no connection with this page.

How were the 150 ZIP codes chosen?

Three cities per state: the largest, the capital and the next largest by 2025 population. Where the capital is the largest, the next two fill in. Each city gives the compact area closest to its center point. That makes 150 of 33,791 areas, so the page cannot give a code for a town of your choice.

When did ZIP codes start, and which are the lowest and highest?

ZIP codes were introduced on 1 July 1963, and ZIP stands for Zone Improvement Plan. The lowest is 00501, used only by the Internal Revenue Service center in Holtsville, New York. The highest is 99950 in Ketchikan, Alaska. This draw runs from 01109 to 99824.

How this list was compiled: Every code is a 2020 ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA), the US Census Bureau's area version of a five-digit ZIP code (https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/geography/guidance/geo-areas/zctas.html). Coordinates (the bureau's internal point for the area) and land area are from the 2025 ZCTA Gazetteer file (https://www2.census.gov/geo/docs/maps-data/data/gazetteer/2025_Gazetteer/2025_Gaz_zcta_national.zip), which lists 33,791 areas. The city and county come from the bureau's 2020 relationship files (https://www2.census.gov/geo/docs/maps-data/data/rel2020/zcta520/tab20_zcta520_place20_natl.txt and tab20_zcta520_county20_natl.txt in the same folder): the county is the one that holds the largest part of the area's land. The 150 rows are three per state: the largest city, the state capital (or the second largest city where the capital is the largest), and the next largest city, ranked by the bureau's 1 July 2025 estimates for incorporated places (https://www2.census.gov/programs-surveys/popest/datasets/2020-2025/cities/totals/sub-est2025.csv). Hawaii has one place in that file, so its other two are the next largest places in the 2020 Census (East Honolulu and Pearl City, checked against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_places_in_Hawaii). For each city the row is the area closest to the city's own center point (from the 2025 place Gazetteer file in the same folder) among the areas of 0.25 to 50 square miles that have more than half their land inside the city limits; for the 18 cities where no area passes that test, mostly small capitals, it is the area that holds the largest part of the city. A row can therefore be a campus or a base that lies inside the city limits. The states behind each first digit were checked against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZIP_Code. Locator maps are drawn from the bureau's 2024 cartographic boundary files (https://www2.census.gov/geo/tiger/GENZ2024/shp/), one state per map with a dot on the area's internal point. All checked 2026-09-18. Census Bureau data is in the public domain. The United States Postal Service claims ZIP Code as a trademark (its service mark registration lapsed in 1997; ZIP+4 is still registered, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZIP_Code, checked 2026-09-18) and has no connection with this page.
