    How it works

This Roman legion name generator builds a name the way Rome did: Legio, a number and a title. The titles of real legions are here with their meanings, beside added Latin words and the emblems legions carried.

    Number, title, emblem

Press New legion name. You get a line such as "Legio XII Nocturna. Emblem: the boar." Tap a part to lock it, then press again: keep one number for the legions of one story, or keep a title and change its emblem.

    Telling real from made up

Open the Title list under the tool. Each real title names every legion of the early Empire that bore it and its main base: Victrix, Ferrata, Gemina, Fulminata. Added words such as Invicta and Vigilans say so. A number and title that are not listed together are most likely a made-up legion.

    Questions and answers

    How were Roman legions named?

By a number and a cognomen, or nickname. Neither was enough alone, Wikipedia's list of legions says: Legio III Cyrenaica and Legio III Gallica were two different legions, so the number and the title are read together.

What do Roman legion names mean?

A title tells an origin, an honor or a quality. Victrix is victorious, Ferrata ironclad, Gemina twinned, Fulminata thunderbolt, Rapax predator, and Alaudae larks. Every title in the list under the tool has its meaning.

What was the emblem of a Roman legion?

A symbol of the legion, frequently an animal or a mythological figure. It was shown on the vexillum, a small rectangular flag that served as the legion's standard. The bull, the boar, the Capricorn and Pegasus were all used.

    Are these real Roman legions?

Some results are. The titles in the first group and all the emblems come from Wikipedia's table of legions of the early Empire, and each line names the real legions. Most pairings of number, title and emblem never existed.

How this list was compiled: 81 titles. The first group holds titles of real legions from the table "Roman legions of the early Empire" of the English Wikipedia article List of Roman legions (read on 2026-10-03, CC BY-SA 4.0): each line gives the meaning the list gives, or the Latin entry of English Wiktionary where the list gives none, and then, taken from the table by script, every legion in that table that bore the title, with its main base as the table names it. The second group holds Latin adjectives we added in the form that agrees with the word legio; each meaning follows the Latin entry of English Wiktionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/, CC BY-SA 4.0), read the same day, and a word found anywhere in the Wikipedia list was left out. Aeterna, Triumphalis and Vindex were cut afterwards: other English Wikipedia articles (Legio II Parthica, Battle of the Sabis, Classis Misenensis) give each as a title a legion or a fleet bore. A full-text search of English Wikipedia for each remaining word after a legion number or honorific found no other. Own selection; meanings from English Wiktionary and English Wikipedia.
