    How it works

This empire name generator deals an invented name, a word for an empire such as Imperium or Hegemony, the lands it rules and what holds them together. Each word for an empire comes with its dictionary meaning.

    Read the full guide

    One press, four parts

Press New empire name. Tap a part to lock it, then press again for the rest. It works as a random empire name generator for a map, a campaign or a history that never happened. Lock the name and press to try it as a Dominion, a Hegemony or a Suzerainty.

    Fantasy lands or star systems

The lands row runs from nine conquered river kingdoms to forty star systems. To use it as a space empire name generator, lock that row on a line about worlds, moons or stations. The list under the tool groups the lines.

    Tips
    • The last row is the plot: ask what happens when the trade route, the coin or the fleet fails.
    • A hegemony has authority over other nations; a suzerainty lets them keep their own governments.

    Questions and answers

What is another word for empire?

Imperium, dominion, hegemony, suzerainty, ascendancy, paramountcy and overlordship are all words for kinds of rule over other lands. The list under the tool gives the dictionary meaning of each.

What makes a state an empire?

A dictionary calls an empire a state that has grown far beyond its first size by conquering the lands around it, or one ruled by an emperor or empress. For a single crown and its flag, use the kingdom name generator.

Can it name an evil empire?

Yes. The last row has a sinister group, with lines such as informers in every marketplace. To use the page as an evil empire name generator, lock one of those lines and press for names.

    Are the names real?

No. Every name was made up and screened against a dictionary, GeoNames places, Wikipedia page titles and fantasy fan wikis, so none should be a real people, country or published setting. Search a name before you publish it.

How this list was compiled: Our own list of 43 lines on what holds a made-up empire together, written on 2026-10-02; the sinister group is for villains and is kept mild. No real government is named or meant. Checked by script against every list on this site and its sister sites. On a second reading three lines that fit only an empire on the ground were cut and five were reworded, so that every line also reads after a line about star systems. Licence: own work
