Narrow it to one family

After your first press, the list beside the button narrows the draw: Whites and neutrals, Blues, Greens, Yellows, pinks and oranges, Purples, or Dark and bold. Set the count to 3 to see three swatches side by side, then hold your phone up to the wall.

From a swatch to a can of paint

The names are plain color words, not any paint maker's shade names, and a screen never matches paint exactly. Take the name to the store, pick two or three chips close to it, and try a sample on the wall. Look at it in the morning and again under lamps before you buy.

Tips
  • A dark color is easier to live with on one wall than on four.
  • Paint a sample on two walls: the one with the window and the one facing it.

Questions and answers

What color should I paint my bedroom?

Start with the family, then the shade. Whites and neutrals go with any bedding, Blues and Greens give the room a clear color without shouting, and Dark and bold suits the one wall behind the bed.

What color makes a small room look bigger?

Pale colors reflect more light, so a small room usually looks more open in warm white, mint, powder blue or pale gray than in navy or charcoal.

Is this a quiz?

No. It is a shuffled list with a filter. Pick a color family if you have one in mind, or leave it on all colors and let the button choose.

All 42 wall colors

Whites and neutrals 8

  • Greige Gray and beige mixed, for when gray feels cold and beige feels dated.
  • Linen A pale, grayish cream that sits quietly behind furniture and pictures.
  • Oatmeal A light tan that goes with wood floors of almost any shade.
  • Pale gray A light gray that lets a bright rug or bedspread do the talking.
  • Sand A beach tan, best with white trim so it does not look yellow.
  • Soft cream Deeper than white, and kind to a room that gets little sun.
  • Taupe A brown-gray that looks rich in a room with plenty of daylight.
  • Warm white A white with a little yellow in it, so walls look soft, not stark.

Blues 8

  • Aqua A blue-green that works in a bathroom or a small bright bedroom.
  • Denim blue A mid blue that suits wood desks and brass lamps.
  • Dusty blue Blue with gray in it, so it never looks like a nursery.
  • Navy A deep blue that makes white trim and pale bedding stand out.
  • Powder blue A very pale blue that reads almost white on a sunny wall.
  • Sky blue A clear light blue; white furniture keeps it fresh.
  • Slate blue A gray-blue that changes through the day as the light moves.
  • Teal A strong blue-green; try one wall before you commit to four.

Dark and bold 6

  • Emerald A jewel green that looks best in a room with lots of daylight.
  • Midnight blue Darker than navy; it needs good lamps in the evening.

How this list was compiled: 42 wall colors for a bedroom or any other room, written for this page on 2026-09-30. Our own, not from a source: the list, the names (plain color words, no paint maker's shade names), every hex value (chosen by eye so a swatch can be shown; a real paint will differ), the groups and every line. The lines say how a color tends to look beside trim, wood and daylight; they make no claim that a color changes mood or sleep. No brand is named. Licence: own work
