Excuse Generator: 192 Comic and Honest Excuses for Six Situations: how it works

This excuse generator draws one line from 192, in six situations: running late, skipping plans, a forgotten birthday, an unanswered text, chores and homework. The comic ones are built to be seen through, and none is a sick note or a line for a boss. Follow the joke with the truth.

The dog has been eating homework since 1905

The earliest known version is not about school. In a 1905 issue of The Cambrian, a magazine for Welsh Americans, a visiting minister admits that his dog ate part of his sermon before the service. The clerk asks for one of its pups for their vicar. The Oxford English Dictionary's first record is a 1929 essay in The Manchester Guardian (now The Guardian): "It is a long time since I have had the excuse about the dog tearing up the arithmetic homework."

A comic excuse needs a real apology behind it

A goose in the road, laundry left to ripen, a birthday card travelling by actual snail: each says "I know, and it is my fault" with a smile. That is why the last chip, The honest one, holds 12 plain lines, two for each situation, such as "I lost track of time. I am sorry, and I am on my way now." Tap it alone to see all 12.

Tips

  • Tap the situation chip first: a homework excuse means nothing to a friend outside the cinema.
  • In a group chat, set the count to 5 and vote on the one the latecomer has to use.
  • The address keeps your chip: a link ending in #late opens on the 38 lines for running late.

Questions and answers

Can I use these excuses for work or school?

Not as real reasons. Nobody could believe the comic lines, and nothing here could stand in for a note. If you missed a shift or an assignment, say what happened and what you will do next. The honest chip has two plain homework lines a teacher can take at face value.

What is a good excuse for being late?

The true one, sent early. "I left too late. That is on me, and I will be there in ten minutes." does more before the start time than any story after it. With a friend, a comic line softens it: "I tried to beat the traffic. The traffic won."

What makes an excuse funny and not annoying?

A funny excuse is impossible, so nobody feels lied to. The joke is on you, never on the person you kept waiting. An apology follows. "I thought today was Saturday until about eleven minutes ago." admits the mistake while it gets a laugh. Use one per slip-up. A second sounds like dodging.

How this list was compiled: Written for this site: all 192 lines are our own wording, and no list, book or site was copied. 180 are comic excuses and 12 are plain, honest apologies (two for each situation, tagged with both the Honest chip and their situation). House rules applied to every comic line: it is absurd enough to be seen through at once, and the joke is on the speaker, never on the person kept waiting. Left out on purpose, by eye and by a word screen run over every line: illness, sick days, doctors, injuries, funerals, deaths, accidents, emergencies, anything about a boss, a shift or an attendance record, anything that could pass as a note from a parent, a doctor or an employer, and alcohol. The word screen flagged only harmless matches (a walk 'to kill time', a message left on read 'by accident', and letters inside will, still, studied and homework), which were read and kept. The six situations are our own sorting: Running late 36, Skipping plans 32, Forgot a birthday 28, Did not text back 28, Chores undone 28 and Homework 28, before the two honest lines are added to each. Nothing in the items states a fact about the world, so no item needed a fact check. Reviewed 2026-09-18: a second read of every line for sense, safety and repeated ideas, plus a script check for repeated lines and shared five-word runs. Licence: own work
