Mother's side, father's side

Tips
  • Hebrew, Japanese and Mandarin cards also show the word in its own writing.
  • Oma, Nonna, Abuela and Babcia are marked as used in English too.

How this list was compiled: Built on 3 October 2026 in three parts. (1) English names: the synonyms that English Wiktionary's thesaurus pages for grandmother and grandfather list (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Thesaurus:grandmother and https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Thesaurus:grandfather), without those it marks obsolete, archaic, rare, dated, slang or eye dialect; the note on a card is the thesaurus's own. Mamgu, which the thesaurus lists for South Wales, is on the card of the Welsh word Mam-gu. (2) Other languages: the words in the translation tables of English Wiktionary's entries grandmother, grandfather, grandma and grandpa (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/grandmother and the three beside it), for a fixed list of languages, one word each, kept only when the word's own entry in that language defines it as a grandmother, a grandfather or a grandparent and marks it neither obsolete nor rude. A word in another script is listed only where the table gives a Latin spelling, which is why Hebrew, Japanese and Mandarin are here and Russian, Greek, Korean, Arabic, Hindi, Thai and Yiddish are not. 147 words in 45 languages. Where a table says a word is for the mother's or the father's side, the card says so. Words left out by hand: French aïeul and aïeule, Polish baba and babka, Tagalog apo, Maori tupuna, Czech děd, Scots guidsire and Vietnamese ôông, which their entries give other first senses or mark as dialect. (3) 29 playful names we picked ourselves. None is on the lists of parts 1 and 2 except Pop-Pop, which the grandfather thesaurus lists and marks slang. No card says how a word is pronounced, and nobody who speaks these languages has read the list. The list is sorted by language, never by a people.
