Five Indonesian clan or family names per press, each with the region it comes from.

  1. NtabaFamily name from North Luwu, Sulawesi, listed under the Rampi people.
  2. SamudraClan name (marga) from the Karo Batak language of Sumatra.
  3. PutuBirth-order name of Bali, not a family name: given to a first-born child.
  4. DamanikClan name (marga) from the Simalungun Batak language of Sumatra.

How it works

Most Indonesians have no family name, an encyclopedia article says. These Indonesian last names are clan and family names from the regions that do pass one down, with Bali's nine birth-order names beside them.

Pick a region

The dropdown, Region, keeps the 147 names of Sumatra and its islands, the 40 of Sulawesi, the 14 of the Maluku Islands or the 42 of Java, Kalimantan, Papua and the east. Each card says where its name is from.

Clan names, family names and Bali

Under More filters, Kind keeps the 113 clan names, most of them Batak marga such as Siregar, Nasution and Simatupang, or the 133 family names. Bali's 9 birth-order names, such as Wayan and Ketut, are not family names: most Balinese use none and call one another by these.

Tips
  • A Batak woman keeps her marga after marriage, the article on Batak clans says.
  • Only a few cards give a meaning; the sources list most names by region and say no more.

Questions and answers

Do Indonesians have last names?

Many do not: the majority of Indonesians have no family name, an encyclopedia article says. Most people in western Indonesia have none; Batak, Nias and Mentawai families are among the exceptions.

What are some common Indonesian last names?

The article on Indonesian names gives Hutabarat, Nainggolan, Panjaitan, Simatupang and Siregar as examples of Batak clan names, and Lembong, Mogot, Ratulangi, Sondakh and Tendean for North Sulawesi. This list uses no count of family names, so it prints no rank.

What is a marga?

A marga is a Batak clan name, used as a surname. Children take the marga of their father, and a woman keeps hers after marriage. In Karo Batak the word is spelled merga.

Are Wayan, Made, Nyoman and Ketut last names?

No. They are Balinese birth-order names: Wayan for a first-born child, Made for a second, Nyoman for a third and Ketut for a fourth. Most Balinese use no family name.

How this list was compiled

Built on 2 October 2026 from four public pages, read that day. One: the section 'Local family/clan names' of English Wikipedia's article 'Indonesian names' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indonesian_names), which names the regions and peoples of Indonesia that pass a family or clan name down and gives examples for each; every example it gives is here under the region it is listed for, except three it lists under a faith community and the Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish and Arabic surnames it mentions for Maluku and Flores. Two: the examples of Batak clan names (marga) in English Wikipedia's article 'Marga (Batak)' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marga_(Batak)); only the clan name is taken, never a person. Three: English Wiktionary's Indonesian surname entries (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:Indonesian_surnames, CC BY-SA 4.0) that the dictionary marks as coming from a Batak language (Karo, Toba, Simalungun, Angkola or Mandailing); the card names the language, 70 cards in all. Four: the birth-order names in English Wikipedia's article 'Balinese name' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balinese_name), which says most Balinese use no family name; these nine are marked as birth-order names, not family names. A name is listed only where one of these pages lists it under a region, a people or a language of Indonesia. No register or count of Indonesian family names was used, so the list is a selection and prints no rank or count. Indonesian surnames of Chinese origin are not part of this list, and one of the article's examples, Bodi, was left off because it stands on another list of this site. The sources give no meaning for nearly all of these names, and a card gives one only where its source does. Counted on 2 October 2026: 10 of 252 names (4.0 in 100) also stand in another list of this site. Licence: Drawn from English Wikipedia and English Wiktionary, CC BY-SA 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/). The selection, the sorting into regions and kinds and the wording of the cards are our own work.
