Press, then lock the ending
Press New city name. The name is the first word, in two parts. Tap a part to lock it and press again. Lock -polis for a city or -limen for a harbor: Kyanolimen is dark-blue harbor. For a Greek town name generator, lock -kome, a village.
A Greek island name generator too
Lock the ending on -nesos, the Ancient Greek word for an island, and every press names an island. The list under the tool shows each part with the Greek word it comes from and its meaning, so Chionopolis reads as snow city.
Tips
These names use k where Latin spelling uses c. Swap the letter for a Roman-era map.
The patron is an invented epithet. Give it a name of your own.
Questions and answers
How were ancient Greek cities named?
Often for a founder or for what the place was. Alexandria was founded by Alexander the Great, and Philippi was renamed by Philip II of Macedon. Megalopolis means great city, Neapolis new city and Heliopolis city of the sun.
What does polis mean?
Polis is the Ancient Greek word for a city. A polis was a Greek city-state, and the word ends many city names: Megalopolis is the great city. Modern Greek says poli.
Are these real Greek cities?
No. Every join was checked against the Pleiades gazetteer of ancient places, the GeoNames table of Greece and Wikipedia titles, and first parts behind a real name were cut. The words themselves are real Ancient Greek.
How this list was compiled: Our own choice of 28 first parts, each the joining form of an Ancient Greek word, shown with the word in Greek letters and its meaning. Each meaning was checked on 2026-10-02 against the Ancient Greek section of the word's English Wiktionary entry (https://en.wiktionary.org/, CC BY-SA 4.0). Every name the First part and Ending rows can spell was checked that day, in Latin letters with k and with c and in Greek letters, against the Pleiades gazetteer of ancient places (44,198 names, https://pleiades.stoa.org/, CC BY 3.0), the GeoNames table of Greece and of places of 500 people and up worldwide with their alternate names (https://download.geonames.org/export/dump/, CC BY 4.0), an English dictionary, every list on this site and exact page titles on English Wikipedia (with k and with c), because Neapolis, Heliopolis and Megalopolis are real cities. The first part behind a match was cut. 33 candidates were cut (28 a real place on the map; 5 a Wikipedia page title), among them Nea, Palaio, Hiero, Mikro, Leuko, Chryso, Helio, Megalo. One more first part, Ampelo, and the ending chora came off afterward: their names stood one letter from real places in the GeoNames table of Greece (Ampelokipoi, and villages that end in -chori). How this list was compiled
11 Ancient Greek words for a kind of place, used as the second half of a name, each with its meaning checked on 2026-10-02 against the Ancient Greek section of its English Wiktionary entry (CC BY-SA 4.0). The screen is described in the First part row's source. One ending was cut afterward: chora, land, because with nine of the first parts it stood one letter from a village of modern Greece that ends in -chori.
