    How it works

This noble name generator makes a noble for a story or a game: a real old first name, an invented family name, and a rank and a seat to inherit, such as the Earldom of Kestrelscar.

    Read the full guide

Name one noble or a whole court

Press New noble name. Tap a part to lock it, then press again. Lock the seat and each press names another heir or rival to the same lands. Lock the family name to fill a house with brothers, sisters and cousins.

    The ranks are real

A duchy is the land of a duke or duchess, the highest of the five ranks of the British peerage. The list under the tool explains every rank, from an archduchy to a castellany. Each rank is named by its land, so it suits any first name.

    Tips
    • Read the result aloud, the way a herald would announce a guest.
    • For a long-lost heir, keep the seat and change only the first name.

    Questions and answers

What are the ranks of nobility in order?

The British peerage has five. From the top: duke, marquess, earl, viscount and baron. A woman of the same ranks is a duchess, marchioness, countess, viscountess or baroness. Other countries add ranks such as archduke, margrave and landgrave.

What is a noble's land called?

It takes its name from the rank: a duke holds a duchy, an earl an earldom, a viscount a viscounty and a baron a barony. A count's land is a county, and a prince's a principality.

    Are these real noble families?

No. The family names and seats are invented. Each was searched as a surname, a place and a Wikipedia title, and each seat was also searched as a title, such as Duke of that place. The first names and ranks are real.

Can I use a name in my own story or game?

Yes. The names are free to use. They belong to no real country, so they suit a fantasy kingdom as well as a historical one. Search a name before you publish it.
