Questions and answers
Is this an Iranian name generator?
It serves as one. Every given name here has an English Wikipedia article filed under Persian or Iranian given names. Iran has other languages too, and this page holds few names from them.
What are common Persian names?
No open national count of names for Iran was found, so this page does not rank them. It holds names that both a dictionary and an encyclopedia list as Persian or Iranian, such as Leila, Soraya, Ali and Bahram.
Do Persian names have meanings?
Many are everyday words. Laleh is also the word for tulip and Bahar the word for spring. The card prints a meaning only where the name's dictionary entry gives that word a definition; no meaning is guessed.
Why does one name have several spellings?
Persian is written in its own script, and there is more than one way to set it in Latin letters. The card leads with one spelling from the name's dictionary entry and adds up to two more.

How this list was compiled: A selection by a written rule, built on 3 October 2026. No national open file of names for Iran was found, so nothing here says how common a name is. Given names: the Persian entries in English Wiktionary's categories of Persian male, female and unisex given names (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:Persian_given_names, CC BY-SA 4.0, read that day). A name is listed when (1) its entry gives a spelling in Latin letters and (2) English Wikipedia has an article on the name under one of those spellings, filed in a category of Persian or Iranian given names (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Persian_given_names, read the same day). 160 names pass; 58 entries have no Latin spelling and 280 no such article, many of them Persian spellings of names from other languages (Jack, Helen, Robert). One name was taken out by hand because its Latin spelling reads as an unrelated English word. The card leads with the spelling of the name's Wikipedia article where the entry lists that spelling and the article is not also filed as an Arabic or Turkish name (17 cards), and otherwise with the first spelling the entry gives; up to two more of the entry's spellings follow 'Also written', and a spelling with marks over its letters is not printed. A meaning is printed only where the same dictionary entry, under the same etymology, also defines the spelling as a common word, in the first definition given (50 cards; for two names, Aryan and Bahman, the word is not printed): the card says 'the same word means', which is what the dictionary shows, not a claim about why a family chose the name. The language after 'From' is the entry's own (43 Arabic, 33 Middle Persian). 'A name in the Shahnameh' is printed where the entry's definition line says so, where the dictionary files the entry under Shahnameh characters, or where the entry quotes the name from the epic (19 cards); the epic holds more of these names than the dictionary marks. Sex is the entry's. Family names: 5 of the 12 Persian surname entries of English Wiktionary whose Latin spelling is also an article in English Wikipedia's category 'Persian-language surnames'; seven were left out: two whose title on English Wikipedia lists or leads to a single living person, one that is first of all a religious title, and four taken out by hand so that no family name here points to a religious lineage, a tribe or a single family (Razavi, Gilani, Beiranvand, Saatchi). The note on surnames after 1925 is from English Wikipedia's article 'Persian name'. Each card carries the addresses of its dictionary entry and its Wikipedia article. No speaker of Persian has read the list, and it names no person. Licence: Drawn from English Wiktionary and English Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/).
