Random Arabic Words With Vowel Marks and a Latin Reading
Five random Arabic words a press, with vowel marks and a Latin reading; the meaning waits under a cover.
How it works
These random Arabic words are everyday Modern Standard Arabic: nouns, verbs, adjectives, greetings and small words. Each card shows the word in Arabic script with its vowel marks and a reading in Latin letters; the meaning is covered.
Read the full guide
Read it, then tap
Press Pick 5 new Arabic words. Read each word from right to left, check yourself against the Latin letters, say the meaning, then tap Show meaning for the English meaning, the part of speech and a noun's gender. The Word type list under the button narrows the draw.
Spot the root
Most Arabic words are built on a root of three consonants. Where the dictionary entry names one, the card prints it: كِتَاب (kitāb, book) and كَتَبَ (kataba, to write) share the root of writing. Draw until two cards show the same root.
Tips
Everyday Arabic print leaves the short vowel marks out; the cards keep them so you can say each word.
A verb is listed in its he-form of the past: kataba is he wrote.
Questions and answers
What do ʕ, ʔ, š and ḵ stand for?
They belong to Wiktionary's transliteration of Arabic. ʕ is the letter ʿayn, as in ʕayn, eye; ʔ is the hamza, a catch in the throat, as in māʔ, water; š is sh and ḵ is kh. A line over a vowel makes it long.
Is this Modern Standard Arabic or a dialect?
Modern Standard Arabic, the written standard of books, news and schools across the Arab world. No dialect word is on the list, so some everyday spoken words will differ from what you hear in one country.
Why are the words written with small marks?
The marks are the short vowels. Arabic letters write the consonants and the long vowels, and ordinary print leaves the short vowels to the reader. Learners' books and these cards print them.
Where do the words and meanings come from?
The choice is ours, from no course list. Each word's vowel marks, reading, meaning and gender come from its entry on English Wiktionary, read by script, and the meanings were compared with a second dictionary.

How this list was compiled: Everyday words of Modern Standard Arabic; no dialect word and no sentence. Each word's part of speech and meaning come from its own entry on English Wiktionary (wikitext read through https://en.wiktionary.org/w/api.php on 2026-10-01, 40 titles to a request, text under CC BY-SA 4.0; the entry's address is in x.src), Arabic section; the page is named by the word without its vowel marks, which x.word keeps. The vowel marks and the reading in Latin letters are those of the entry's headword line, read by expanding the entry's own headword template through the same API and never worked out by our script; a word whose headword line gives two vocalizations (نهر, أذن, دجاج, ربما) is left out. The reading follows Wiktionary's transliteration of Arabic (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wiktionary:Arabic_transliteration ). Verbs are in the third person masculine singular of the past, the form dictionaries list. A noun's gender is the one printed on its headword line. The root is printed only where the entry names one for that word (a root box or a root in its etymology) and the root's letters stand in the word; 231 of the 313 cards carry one, written as separate Arabic letters. Second source, by script on 2026-10-01: FreeDict's Arabic-English and English-Arabic dictionaries (https://freedict.org , ara-eng and eng-ara 0.6.3, made from the Arabeyes word list, GNU GPL), used as a check and not as the source. The unvocalized word stands there with a word of our meaning for 238 of the 313 words; 10 words are not in it; the rest are listed there under another English word, often an inflected form (went, bought), because that list is not kept by dictionary form. Nobody on this project reads Arabic, so nothing here rests on our own judgment of the language. Nothing religious is quoted. The list is our own choice of everyday vocabulary and is copied from no exam body's or course's list. The English meanings are our own short wording; a script then checked that a word of each meaning stands in a definition line under the same part-of-speech heading of the entry, and words that failed were left out. Every English meaning was read for a general audience that includes children: no slang, insult, swear word, alcohol or adult term. After the file was written a script read it back and checked every row against the saved entry text again. Licence: own work
