These random Italian words are everyday nouns, verbs, adjectives and small words. A noun comes with its article, so its gender is in sight; the English meaning waits under a cover until you tap it.

Guess, then tap
Press Pick 5 new Italian words. Say what each one means, then tap Show meaning: the card gives the English meaning, the part of speech and, for a noun, masculine or feminine. The Word type list under the button keeps the draw to nouns, verbs, adjectives, small words or false friends.
Read the gender off the article
Il and lo are masculine and la is feminine: il giardino, lo zaino, la chiave. Lo stands before z and before s plus a consonant, as in lo studente. L' hides the gender before a vowel, so l'amico is masculine and l'isola feminine; the covered line settles it.
Tips
Not every noun in -a is feminine: il problema is masculine.
False friends look English and are not: la camera is a room, caldo is hot, il parente a relative.
Questions and answers
What are Italian false friends?
Words that look like an English word and mean something else. Here la libreria is a bookstore, morbido is soft, la fattoria is a farm and noioso is boring. Choose False friends in the Word type list to draw only those.
Why does every Italian noun come with an article?
The article shows the gender, and a learner needs the two together. Each gender was read from the noun's Wiktionary entry, and the article follows the standard rule for the word's first letters.
Are Italian dishes on this list?
No. Food words such as il riso and lo zucchero are here; named dishes are on the Italian food page.
Where do the words and meanings come from?
The choice is ours, from no exam or course list. Every word was then checked by script against its Italian entry on English Wiktionary: the part of speech, the meaning and each noun's gender.

How this list was compiled: Everyday Italian words. Each word's spelling, part of speech and meaning come from its own entry on English Wiktionary (wikitext read through https://en.wiktionary.org/w/api.php on 2026-09-30, 40 titles to a request, text under CC BY-SA 4.0; the entry's address is in x.src), Italian section, and each noun's gender is the one in the entry's it-noun template. The article in front of a noun (il, lo, la or l') is set by script from that gender and the word's first letters, by the rule read on 2026-09-30 in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_grammar (lo before s plus a consonant, z, gn, ps, x and y; l' before a vowel; il otherwise; la before a consonant and l' before a vowel for feminine nouns). False friends are our own selection of words that look like an English word and mean something else; the Italian meaning on each card was checked in the entry like every other, and the English look-alike is named after the word 'not'. No dish names. The list is our own choice of everyday vocabulary and is copied from no exam body's or course's list. The English meanings are our own short wording; a script then checked that a word of each meaning stands in a definition line under the same part-of-speech heading of the entry, and words that failed were left out. Every English meaning was read for a school audience: no slang, insult, swear word, alcohol or adult term. After the file was written a script read it back and checked every row against the saved entry text again. Licence: own work
