Draw a band to look up
Press Pick 5 new bands. Each card names a band, and the line under it says when and where it formed, its style and why it is listed. Choose a decade in the Any decade menu, or open More filters for Style, Country and On the list for. After a press, Lock a band you want to keep and press again.
Groups only, and how one earns its place
Solo artists are left out and no member is named. The year is the first year the band's Wikipedia article lists it as active, the place is its listed origin and the style is the first genre listed. A group whose award was later taken back is not listed.
Tips
Quiz night: press Hide all facts, then guess the decade and the city before you look.
Want a band to hear next? Choose a Style under More filters and take the first card.
Questions and answers
Are these real bands or made-up band names?
Real ones. Every card is a group with its own Wikipedia article and an honor that can be looked up: a Hall of Fame induction, a Grammy or a diamond album.
Is the band random each time?
Yes. Each press draws afresh from the bands that match your filters, and a card you lock stays put while the others change.
Why is my favorite band missing?
The list follows three facts and no opinions: the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, two Grammy awards and diamond albums. Plenty of loved bands have none of the three yet, and the list is read again every twelve months.
Why is a solo star's band not here?
Only acts whose article describes a group are listed. A singer inducted alone is left out; a backing band inducted in its own right, such as The Crickets or The Comets, is in.

How this list was compiled: Every band is on the list for a fact that can be looked up, never for anyone's taste. Three rules, read on 2026-09-30 from English Wikipedia: (1) the act is in the Performers table of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Rock_and_Roll_Hall_of_Fame_inductees, classes of 1986 to 2025; (2) the act won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammy_Award_for_Best_New_Artist) or for Album of the Year (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammy_Award_for_Album_of_the_Year), winners' rows only; (3) the act has an album that https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_albums_in_the_United_States shows as certified ten times platinum or more by the RIAA, printed here as a diamond album, as the album list on this site does. Groups only: an act is listed when its own English Wikipedia article describes a band, duo or group and lists members; solo artists are left out, and so are groups that have no article of their own. No member is named on any card. The list holds 174 groups: 138 in the Hall of Fame, 29 with one of the two Grammy awards and 47 with a diamond album, and a group can carry more than one. The year formed is the first year the article's infobox gives under years active; the place is the first place the infobox gives as the origin (one group's infobox gives none, and none is printed); the style is the first genre the infobox lists. Each article was read through the Wikipedia API on 2026-09-30, and every row was compared with the fetched text again by script after this file was written. The year after an award is the year of the ceremony or of the induction. No sales figure is printed because those move. Left out on purpose: a duo whose Best New Artist award of 1990 was revoked, as the award page records, and one inducted group whose article gives no year of formation. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a mark of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, Grammy of the Recording Academy and the diamond award of the Recording Industry Association of America; they are named as facts, and this site is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them or by any band. The earliest group formed in 1947 and the latest in 2009, counted from the dataset. Review interval 12 months. Licence: own work
