Word of the day

Random Word Generator for Songs: 5 Words to Start a Lyric: how it works

This random word generator for songs deals five words from a list of 542, each one something you can see, hear or touch: boxcar, candlelight, shiver. Every card gives the syllable count and three words that rhyme with it. Lock the words that belong in one scene, then press New words to replace the others.

How to turn five words into a verse

Do not try to use all five. Lock the two that pull at each other, say boxcar and lullaby, and swap the other three until one more fits the picture. Put the strongest word at the end of a line, where the rhyme lands. End on boxcar and its card hands you bazaar, star and car.

A five-minute band warm-up from one draw

Set the count to 3 and give every writer the same draw. Each has five minutes to write four lines that use all three words. Read them out and keep one line from each writer. Nobody chose the words, which is the point of a random song word generator: no one has to defend them. The word of the day does the same job in a group chat: one word, one verse each, by tonight.

Tips

  • Pair a theme with a length: Verbs plus One syllable leaves 91 words that sit on a single beat, such as cling, sway and strum.
  • Turn on Starts with and pick a letter to draw words for an alliterated line, such as sand, satellite and sawdust.
  • Save the words you lock, then draw again with the Verbs chip on to give those nouns something to do.

Questions and answers

How do I stop the lyric sounding random?

Treat the draw as a picture, not a checklist. Keep the two or three words that belong in one scene and swap any word that fights the song. A random word song generator only supplies raw material, and listeners never see the draw, so nothing is lost by dropping a word.

Where do the syllable counts and rhymes come from?

From the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary, a pronunciation list from Carnegie Mellon University, checked on 18 September 2026. Two words rhyme here when they sound the same from the last stressed vowel to the end, so radio sits with snow and hummingbird with word. The dictionary is American English, so your accent may differ.

Why does fire say 1 or 2 syllables?

The dictionary lists it both ways. Fire, wire, hour, flour and prayer can each be said in one beat or stretched over two, so their cards say so, and those five words show up under both One syllable and Two syllables. Count them the way your melody needs.

How this list was compiled: Words chosen by hand for lyric writing. Syllable counts and rhymes are computed from the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary, file cmudict.dict at https://github.com/cmusphinx/cmudict, fetched and checked 2026-09-18. Syllables are the vowel sounds in the word's first listed pronunciation; five words (fire, wire, hour, flour, prayer) are listed there with one and with two syllables and say so; the dictionary also lists a rare two-syllable variant of spring (S P ER0 IH1 NG), which we ignore, so spring is marked as one syllable. Two words rhyme here when their first listed pronunciations match from the last stressed vowel to the end. The dictionary's LICENSE file (https://github.com/cmusphinx/cmudict/blob/master/LICENSE, read 2026-09-18) is a two-clause BSD-style licence, not a public domain dedication: 'Copyright (C) 1993-2015 Carnegie Mellon University. The word choice, themes and card wording are our own. Re-sorted 2026-09-19 after review: the three rhymes printed on each card are now chosen by script from the same rhyme family so that words whose rhyming syllable carries the main stress come first (snow before shadow for radio), the three have different endings where the family allows, and a compound is not shown beside the word it ends in. No word or rhyme was added or removed. Licence: Own word list and card wording.
