Random Country Outline: 178 Country Shapes to Guess or Draw

All 178 outlines

How this list was compiled: The 178 outlines are the UN member states (193 on https://www.un.org/en/about-us/member-states) that have a usable drawing. Fifteen members have none, because at this size a scattered island group is only dots or the country is too small for the map data: Bahamas, Cabo Verde, Kiribati, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Monaco, Nauru, Palau, São Tomé and Príncipe, Seychelles, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu. They are never drawn. Names, codes and regions follow the UN M49 standard (https://unstats.un.org/unsd/methodology/m49/overview/), which is why Cyprus, Turkey, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan sit under Asia, Russia under Europe and Mexico under Central America; everyday English short names are ours (Ivory Coast, Turkey, Laos), with the UN name under x.unName. The North America group is M49's Northern America, Central America and Caribbean; Asia and Oceania are one group because only five Oceania members have a drawing. Capitals were checked against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_capitals (Ciudad de la Paz for Equatorial Guinea since 2026; every state with more than one seat carries x.capitalNote). Populations are World Bank Open Data totals for 2025 (SP.POP.TOTL, last updated 2026-07-13, CC BY 4.0, https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SP.POP.TOTL), rounded on the cards; the 50 most populous are ranked among all 193 members. The 43 landlocked members are the 44 countries in the table at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landlocked_country less Vatican City, which is not a UN member. Outlines are drawn from Natural Earth 5.1.1 (https://www.naturalearthdata.com/, public domain), each projected on its own and scaled to fill its box, so they are not to a common scale, and far-off parts are left out (x.outlineNote says which). Natural Earth draws lines of control, so five outlines were redrawn for this page from the same data (files under /img/random-country-shape-generator/): Ukraine with Crimea and Russia without it, Somalia with Somaliland, Cyprus as the whole island, Morocco without Western Sahara. Serbia is drawn without Kosovo and Kashmir follows the line of control, as in the map data. Kosovo, Taiwan, Palestine, Vatican City and Western Sahara are not UN members and are never drawn; eight territories with a well-known shape sit under optInItems. All checked 2026-09-18.
