How it works

Each random country song here earned its place by a fact: it won the CMA award for Song or Single of the Year, won the Grammy for Best Country Song, or was Billboard's top country single of its year.

Draw five, then pick a decade

Press Pick 5 new songs for five titles, each with its act, its release year where the song's article gives one for that record, and the fact behind it. The Any decade menu keeps the draw to one era, from the 1940s to the 2020s. More filters draws only CMA winners, only Grammy winners or only year-end chart toppers.

Random country music, picked by rule

The list holds 131 songs, winners only, and nobody's favorites. A later hit version of an older song, such as Willie Nelson's Always on My Mind, prints its act without a release year.

Tips
  • Press Hide all artists, read a title aloud and let the room name the singer.
  • An award year is the ceremony year, so it can fall a year or two after the release.

Questions and answers

What counts as a country song here?

Whatever the Country Music Association, the Recording Academy or Billboard counted: a winner of one of the two CMA awards or of the country-song Grammy, or the top single of a year on the country chart.

Why is a famous country song missing?

It may never have won one of these awards or topped a year-end chart; nominees are not listed. Others were left out by hand because the title or the story is about drink, an affair, prison or a death.

Can I get random country songs from one decade?

Yes. Choose it in the Any decade menu: the 1980s hold 25 songs and the 1990s hold 23. A link ending in #decade=1990s opens the page that way.

Is every song safe for children?

That was not checked. Only titles and act names were read, never the words sung. Listen to a track yourself before you play it for children.

How this list was compiled: Every song is on the list for a fact that can be looked up, not for anyone's taste. The facts were read on 2026-10-01 from English Wikipedia, and each row was compared with the fetched text again by script after this file was written. Three rules, winners only: (1) the song won the Country Music Association Award for Song of the Year or for Single of the Year (1967 to 2025, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Country_Music_Association_Award_for_Song_of_the_Year and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Country_Music_Association_Award_for_Single_of_the_Year); (2) it won the Grammy Award for Best Country Song (1965 to 2025 ceremonies, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammy_Award_for_Best_Country_Song); (3) it was Billboard's year-end number-one country single (1946 to 2024, the Country column of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Billboard_Year-End_number-one_singles_and_albums). Songs with no Wikipedia article of their own are left out, and so is a winning cover that has only a section of the first record's article. The rules gave 197 songs with an article. The act is the one the award or chart table credits; the release year is the one in the infobox of the song's own article and is printed only when that infobox names the same act and the year is no more than two years before the award or chart year, so a later hit version of an older song prints its act without a release year. A song that won only the songwriters' award and whose article opens on another recording prints its writers instead of an act. The year after an award is the ceremony year, and a song that won the same award two years running prints the second of them, as the table does. Where no release year is printed the decade is the decade of the first award or chart year. Left out on purpose, because children use this site: 61 songs after a person read every title and the opening of its article (songs about drink, tobacco, an affair, violence, prison, a death, an illness, a disaster, politics or gambling, doubtful wordings, and one act we chose not to print); 5 more because the linked article has no song infobox or is an album. The list holds 131 songs: 50 carry a CMA award, 41 a Grammy and 58 a year-end chart fact, and a song can carry more than one. Only titles and act names were read; the words of the songs were not. No lyrics, no recordings and no links to players are given. The award and chart names are marks of their owners; they are named here as facts and this site is not affiliated with any of them. Review interval 12 months. Licence: own work
