Pick a random movie for tonight

Press Pick 3 new movies and three random movies appear, each with its year, rating, genre, country and a one-line premise. Lock the one somebody wants and press again to change the rest. Open More filters in the rating menu for Genre, Decade and On the list for: Comedy with 1980s, or Best Picture winners alone.

What the rating on a card means

Ratings are the Motion Picture Association's, looked up film by film in its database. Not rated means the database has no entry, which is true of most films made before November 1968; it does not mean suitable for children. A film re-rated for a later release shows the later rating.

Tips
  • For a young audience choose G and PG: a Not rated film is unchecked, not cleared.
  • A PG from before July 1984 predates PG-13, so it can be stronger than a PG today.
  • Use it as a randomizer: movies you lock stay put while every other card changes.

Questions and answers

Is this a random film picker or a random film chooser?

Both: it picks at random and you choose from three. Every film is here by rule, a Best Picture nomination or the biggest box office of its year, so nobody's taste decided the list.

Can I get a random movie list to copy?

Yes. Press Show 5 and then Show 10 under the cards for a random list of movies with year and rating: ten random movies to watch. Copy the list and Print sit beside it.

Why does a famous film never come up?

Either it was never nominated for Best Picture and never led a year's box office, or it is rated R and the page opens without those. Choose Every film to include them. At most five films of one franchise are listed.

Why do so many old films say Not rated?

The rating system began on 1 November 1968. An older film has a rating only if it was sent in later for a re-issue or home video, as Casablanca and Gone with the Wind were.

How this list was compiled: Every film is on the list for a fact that can be looked up, never for anyone's taste. Two rules, read on 2026-09-30 from English Wikipedia: (1) the film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture (the winners and nominees table of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award_for_Best_Picture, from the 1st awards for 1927/28 to the 98th for 2025; the gold rows are the winners); (2) the film is the only one named for its year in the table High-grossing films by year of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_films, 1915 to 2025. Thirty years in which that table names more than one possible leader, most of them before 1980, give no film here, and 2026 is left out because the year is not over. The list holds 663 films: 96 winners, 521 other nominees and 78 yearly box office leaders, and a film can be both a nominee and a leader. Year, country, running time and genre come from each film's own English Wikipedia article, read through the Wikipedia API on 2026-09-30: the year is the earliest year in the infobox release field, so a film first shown at a festival late one year can carry a year before its award year; the genre is the wording of the article's opening sentence (or of its genre categories where the sentence names none); the country is the nationality in that sentence, or else the countries the infobox lists, and a film with three or more is marked international. The one-line premise on each card is ours, written from the article's lead and the opening of its plot section; it gives the starting situation only, no ending and no opinion, and every name and number in it was checked against the article text by script. Ratings were looked up one title at a time on 2026-09-30 in the Motion Picture Association's own database at https://www.filmratings.com/ (search page https://www.filmratings.com/search-results/). A rating is given only where the database has an entry for this exact film: the same title or the title the database files it under, rated within a year of release, or a later entry marked as a re-issue or re-rating of this film; entries for remakes and unrelated films of the same name were rejected by hand. The certificate number is kept in each entry so the rating can be traced. 423 films are rated (123 G or PG, 112 PG-13, 188 R); 45 of those ratings were given more than a year after release, for a re-issue, a home-video edition or an edited version, and that later rating is the one shown. Four films the database lists under the 1969 to 1971 labels M and GP are shown as PG, the name those labels were given in 1972. Not rated on the other 240 means only that the database had no entry for that film on the day checked, which covers most films made before the rating system began on 1 November 1968; it does not mean suitable for children. A PG given before 1 July 1984, when PG-13 began, can cover material that would be PG-13 today. The page opens without the R-rated films because children use this site; they are one choice away under Rating. Left out altogether: a 1969 Best Picture winner whose article describes it as X-rated, the adults-only rating of its day; two nominees, of 2009 and 2016, with a swear word in the title; the 1915 box office leader, which is known above all for its racist portrayal of Black Americans; and the sixth film of each of two franchises, since five films of one franchise is the limit. G, PG, PG-13 and R are the Motion Picture Association's marks, reported as published; Academy Award and Oscar are marks of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This site is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Academy, the Motion Picture Association, or any studio. No review scores, no streaming details and no artwork are given. The earliest film is from 1916 and the latest from 2025, counted from the dataset. Review interval 12 months: the next awards and the next year's box office leader are added then. Licence: own work
