Random Question Generator: 600 Questions With Follow-Ups: how it works

Press New question and the page deals one random question. The list holds 600 in five chips: deep, funny, this or that, hypothetical and about you. Every card has a follow-up under it, because the second question is where a conversation starts. No card asks about money, health or a painful memory, and each was written to be easy with people you just met.

Why every card has a follow-up

A 2017 paper by Huang and others in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that people who ask more questions, particularly follow-up questions, are better liked by the other person, and that most of us do not expect it. So ask the card, hear the whole answer, then use the follow-up or a better one of your own. A random question generator that only fires openers gives you a quiz, not a talk.

Pick the chip for the room

This or that cards take five seconds, so they suit a video call where ten people answer in turn. Funny is for a table that has gone quiet. About you asks for memories and favorites, which suits a new class or team. Save Deep for last: Arthur Aron's 1997 closeness study ordered its 36 questions from light to personal, and that order works here.

Tips

  • Going round a group? Draw once and let everyone answer the same card.
  • Let anyone pass without a reason, then press again. Draws do not repeat until all 600 have come up.
  • Tap the heart on cards that landed well. Six saved questions make a ready list for the next dinner or long drive.

Questions and answers

What is a random question?

It is a question drawn by chance from a list, so neither person chose it. That is the useful part: nobody wonders why you asked. Here each of the 600 has the same chance, or each of the 120 under the chip you pressed. A random questions generator that strings random words together is a different thing.

Can I use this at work or in class?

Yes. Every question was read against the same rules: a stranger can answer it in under a minute, and it stays away from money, health, looks, romance, politics, religion and bad memories. For a standing meeting, the question of the day shows everyone the same card. Under-tens will do better with the questions for kids.

Where do the questions come from?

We wrote all 600, with their follow-ups, for this page. None is taken from another site or a card game, and nothing is made up on the spot by software: the page shuffles a fixed list that you can read in full at the bottom.

How this list was compiled: All 600 questions and their follow-ups were written for this page by the Random Generator HQ editors; none is copied from another list. Each one was read against four house rules before it went in: a stranger can answer it in under a minute, it needs no special knowledge, it does not ask about money, health, bodies, romance, politics, religion or a painful memory, and it names no brand, show or living person. No card asks for the kind of detail used as an account security answer, such as a first pet's name, a first job, a teacher's name or an old screen name. About twenty About you cards ask for a childhood favorite or a memory of growing up; they were kept light, but skip any that does not suit the room. The five groups are our own sorting: Deep (120), Funny (120), This or that (120), Hypothetical (120) and About you (120). The questions have no right answer, so they need no fact-checking. The two studies named in the page copy were checked on 2026-09-19. The follow-up finding is from Huang, Yeomans, Brooks, Minson and Gino, 'It doesn't hurt to ask: Question-asking increases liking', Journal of Personality and Social Psychology 113(3), 2017, pages 430 to 452, record at https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28447835/ ; a correction published in the same journal in 2025 (volume 128, issue 3, page 669) fixed minor reporting errors and states that the paper's conclusions stand. The 36 questions ordered from light to personal are from Aron, Melinat, Aron, Vallone and Bator, 'The Experimental Generation of Interpersonal Closeness', Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin 23(4), 1997, https://doi.org/10.1177/0146167297234003 , as described at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Aron . None of those 36 questions is reproduced here. First written 2026-09-18. Second pass 2026-09-19 by the Random Generator HQ review desk, separate from the first write: every question and follow-up was read again for sense, safety and duplicates of idea; 26 cards were replaced or reworded and 61 short or repeated follow-ups were rewritten to ask for a story or an example.
