Wood Elf Name of the day

    How it works

This wood elf name generator joins a short opening to a short ending, then adds a home grove such as the Alder Fen. Every grove is named for a real tree, with one checked fact about it.

    Read the full guide

Press for a name, then choose the grove

Press New wood elf name. Tap the grove to lock it, and each new press names another elf of the same wood. Lock an ending instead to name a family.

    Groves named for real trees

Each grove pairs a tree with a landform: a fen, a hollow, a ridge. The list under the tool has a true line for every tree. Rowans are also called mountain-ashes, and the fruit of the hazel is the hazelnut.

    Tips
    • Fit the grove to your map: willow for wet ground, fir and larch for the mountains.
    • A short name has to carry across a clearing, so try yours aloud.

    Questions and answers

    What is a wood elf?

Wood elf is a general term for an elf that lives in wooded places such as forests. Several fantasy games and book series have wood elves of their own; the names here follow none of them.

How do you make up a wood elf name?

Keep it short: two syllables, soft consonants and a light ending. Then say where the elf is from. Ysalen of the Alder Fen and Wylreth of Rowan Hollow are made that way.

Are these names from a game or a book?

No. The openings and endings are our own. Each name they can spell was looked up as a page title on Wikipedia and on fan wikis of fantasy games and books, and any part that made a match came out.

    Are the trees real?

Yes. Every grove is named for a real tree, from alder and rowan to ginkgo and baobab, and the line beside it was checked against the Wikipedia article on that tree.
