How it works

Names by the decade they peaked

Choose Women's given names or Men's given names in the menu under the button. A card names the decade of birth with the most bearers: Maria, Francisca and José peaked in the 1960s, Ana, Letícia and João in the 2000s. Open More filters to keep one decade.

Short forms such as Chico and Paulinho

Choose Short forms for 50 pet forms, each with the full name behind it: Chico is Francisco, Duda is Eduardo or Eduarda. 10 are made with -inho or -inha, a diminutive ending like the English -ie, so Carlinhos is little Carlos.

Tips
  • 113 given names reached Brazil's national top 20 in some decade; the other 58 only that of a state.
  • The census prints names without accents. The accents in João, Antônio and Patrícia come from each name's dictionary entry.

Questions and answers

What are the most common Brazilian names?

In Brazil's 2010 census the most common women's first names were Maria, Ana, Francisca, Antônia and Adriana, and the most common men's first names were José, João, Antônio, Francisco and Carlos.

Is this a Brazilian football name generator?

It can serve as one. The Short forms group holds one-word pet forms such as Paulinho, Carlinhos and Zé, each with the full name behind it. No player is named, and no card says who uses a name.

Why is Antônio spelled with a circumflex?

Brazil and Portugal spell some names differently: Antônio and Sônia in Brazil, António and Sónia in Portugal. Where the dictionary has both, this page takes the spelling it marks as Brazilian.

Are these real Brazilian names?

Yes. Every given name was among the 20 most common for a decade of birth in Brazil or in one of its states in the 2010 census name counts of IBGE, Brazil's statistics institute, read on 3 October 2026. Only the draw is random.

How this list was compiled: Given names: 'Nomes no Brasil', the count of first names in Brazil's 2010 population census, published by IBGE, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (https://censo2010.ibge.gov.br/nomes/, data service https://servicodados.ibge.gov.br/api/docs/nomes?versao=2, read 3 October 2026). The census counted people by first name and decade of birth. Rule of this list: a name is a candidate when it is among the 20 most common first names of women or of men born in one decade, from the years before 1930 to the 2000s, in Brazil as a whole or in one of its 26 states or the Federal District: 231 women's and 139 men's names. IBGE prints names in capitals without accents, so a candidate is listed only when English Wiktionary has a Portuguese given-name entry for it (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:Portuguese_given_names, CC BY-SA 4.0, read the same day), and the card's spelling and accents are that entry's; where the dictionary has a Brazilian and a European spelling, the card takes the one it marks as Brazilian (Antônio, not António). 123 candidates have no such entry and are left out, Filho and Filha among them (words for son and daughter that follow a name as Junior does), with many names made in Brazil such as Edson, Cristiane and Josiane. Every listed name that reached the national top 20 of a decade is here (113). A name that reached only a state's top 20 is listed when no other list of this site held the same letters, accents ignored, on the day (58 are here, 76 are left out), so that this list stays the page's own. The census counted people alive in 2010, so 'most bearers were born in' is a count of the living by decade of birth, not of births. A card gives that decade, the decades in which the name was in the national top 20, and the English form where the dictionary entry gives one. IBGE's terms of use were not read, so no count is printed. Sex is the census's. Short forms: the Portuguese entries in English Wiktionary's categories of diminutives of male and of female given names that say which name they come from (50 cards; left out are 8 short forms whose title on English Wikipedia is, or leads to, one living person's article, and 2 that are also crude words, one in Brazil and one in English); the note on -inho and -inha is that dictionary's entry for the ending (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/-inho#Portuguese). The dictionary does not say how common a short form is, and several are used in Portugal as well. The list is a selection, names no person, and no speaker of Portuguese has read it.
