How it works

Each press deals one word. Say as many rhymes as you can, then press Show rhymes: the card lists six to ten words that rhyme with it exactly and names the sound they share, such as -ight.

Read the full guide

Call them out, then check

Press Pick another word. Say every rhyme you can think of, then press Show rhymes. The line lists common words that rhyme exactly, in alphabet order, and ends with the shared sound. After the first press a Vowel sound list appears under the button; it keeps to one sound, such as long a.

Rhymes go by sound, not spelling

Right rhymes with white and site, stuff with rough and tough, and bed with head and bread. Every set was matched by pronunciation, so the spelling can surprise you: journal rhymes with colonel.

Tips
  • Random rhyme words work as a warm-up: one word on the board, rhymes called out, then Show rhymes.
  • More filters, at the end of the Vowel sound list, opens Beats: Two beats draws words like table and stumble.

Questions and answers

What counts as a rhyme here?

An exact rhyme: the last stressed vowel and every sound after it match, as in light and night. Near rhymes are left out, and so is a word that sounds exactly like the card's word, such as write for right.

Whose pronunciation do the rhymes follow?

General American, as recorded in the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary. A word was kept only where Wiktionary's rhyme page for that sound lists it too. In other accents a few pairs may differ.

Why are some common rhymes missing?

Each line stops at ten words, the commonest first, and skips words unsuited to a children's page. A word with two pronunciations, such as read or wind, is left out of every set.

How this list was compiled: Rhyme sets computed by script and then read word by word. The rule: two words rhyme when the last stressed vowel and every sound after it are the same in the dictionary's first pronunciation of each; a word whose listed pronunciations give two different rhymes (read, wind, live) is left out of every set, and a word that sounds exactly like the card's word (write for right) is not counted as its rhyme. Words come only from Princeton WordNet 3.1 lemmas that carry a sense tag count, together with the words of this site's noun, verb, adjective, adverb and song-word lists, and every one has an English Wiktionary entry (wikitext read through https://en.wiktionary.org/w/api.php on 2026-09-30). Second source: a word stays in a set only when the rhymes line of its own Wiktionary entry files it under the same rhyme as the rest of the set and Wiktionary's Rhymes page for that sound (address in x.page, read through the same API the same day) lists it; a pair the two sources disagree on is left out, and one sound with no Rhymes page was dropped. Each card gives the commonest rhymes first chosen by WordNet tag count, at most ten, printed in alphabet order; a sound with fewer than six such rhymes has no card, which is why the list holds 177 sets and not the 250 first planned. The whole list was read for a children's page, and rude, grim, alcohol and insult words and rare or regional words were taken out by hand, with ten sets that read badly. The card's word is the commonest word of the set whose spelling shows the sound plainly, and 13 were chosen by hand for a plainer spelling (bed, not head, for -ed). The shared sound at the end of each line is that word's spelling from its vowel on, so it is a plain spelling and not a phonetic one. Vowel groups follow the stressed vowel: a vowel followed by r, and the vowel of bird, go under R sounds; the vowels of saw, now and boy go under Other vowels. Beats is the number of syllables in the card's word. After the file was written a script read it back and checked every word of every set against both sources again.
