Each press draws one chord shape for a six-string guitar in standard tuning and shows it as a chord box. With it come the frets, low E string first, and the notes that sound. Begin with open chords, or pick barre chords for a workout.

How to read the chord box
The six upright lines are the strings, low E on the left. The lines across are frets, and a thick top line is the nut. A dot is a fingertip. A long bar is a barre: one finger laid across those strings. A cross above a string means leave it out; a ring means play it open. A number beside the box is the fret its top row stands for. The fret line says the same thing: in x32010, x is a string left out and 0 an open string.

Questions and answers
Which guitar chords should a beginner learn first?
The eight open chords: C, A, G, E and D major, and A, E and D minor. Each uses open strings and no more than three fingers. Choose Open chords to draw only those.
What is a barre chord?
One finger lies flat across the strings at one fret while the others make an E or A chord shape above it. Move the whole shape up a fret and the chord rises a semitone: F at fret 1, F♯ at 2, G at 3.
What is a power chord?
The root and the note a fifth above it, often with the root again an octave higher. It has no third, so it is neither major nor minor, and it is written with a 5, as in E5.

How this list was compiled: Own list of 67 common chord shapes for a six-string guitar in standard tuning, E A D G B E from the lowest string to the highest (Wikipedia, Guitar chord, read 2026-09-30). Nothing here is typed by hand but the fret string of each shape. A script works out the note every string sounds (open string plus one semitone a fret) and refuses a shape that sounds any note outside the chord as the chord list of this site spells it (that list is checked against Wikipedia's chord tables), whose lowest note is not the root, or that leaves out anything but the fifth of a seventh chord; where a fifth is left out the card says so. The chord boxes are our own drawings, made by the same script from the same fret string. Also read 2026-09-30: Wikibooks, Guitar/Open Chords, https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Guitar/Open_Chords , whose fingerings for E, A, D, C, E minor, A minor and D minor leave the same strings open and unplayed as these shapes and which gives G as frets 320003; Wikibooks, Guitar/Barre Chords, https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Guitar/Barre_Chords (the E major shape behind a full barre is a major chord at any fret, lifting one finger makes it minor, and the A shape is played on five strings); Wikipedia, Open chord (a chord with one or more strings not fingered) and Power chord (root and fifth, with octaves; written E5). No finger numbers are given: the sources read give them for only a few shapes. Barre and power shapes are listed up to fret 7. Licence: own work
