Dwarven Last Names

One press joins two halves into a dwarf clan name and adds its craft, its hall and an old grudge.

Clan Screevault, known for quenching. Their hall: a hall heated by the forges below. They still hold a grudge over a chair built to the wrong height.

Padlock: keep a part. Arrows: change only that part.

    Dwarf Clan of the day

    How it works

These dwarven last names are clan names: a word of stone, metal, fire or craft joined to an ending such as beard, hammer or delve. Each clan comes with a real craft, a hall and a grudge.

    Read the full guide

Use it as a dwarf last name generator

Press New dwarf clan. Tap a half to lock it, then press again. A locked first half gives one clan and its branches (Basaltbrow, Basalthelm); a locked ending gives neighbors (Pewterbeard, Ingotbeard). Both halves are listed in full under the tool.

    The crafts are real

A dwarf clan name generator needs something for the clan to be proud of, so every craft is a real trade with a line in the list. Niello is a black mixture inlaid in engraved silver. Fire-setting cracks a rock face with fire and then liquid.

    Tips
    • As a dwarven clan name generator for one mountain, lock the hall: each press names another clan that shares it.

    Questions and answers

What are good dwarf last names?

Ones that sound dug or hammered: Basaltbrow, Pewterbeard, Shaledelve, Garnethammer, Bedrockwarden. Each joins a stone, metal, fire or craft word to a clan ending, and all of them are made here.

Do dwarves have last names or clan names?

In most fantasy stories they are the same thing: a dwarf gives a first name and then the clan. So read the first two rows alone for a last name. For first names, use the dwarf name generator.

Are these clan names from a game or a book?

Not on purpose. Every join was searched in a dictionary, on Wikipedia and in the page titles of fantasy fan wikis, and the half behind a match was cut. Iron, Silver, Granite and Deep went that way. Search a name before you publish it.

    What is the grudge for?

It gives the clan a history in one line: a borrowed anvil that came back chipped, a tunnel dug two feet over the line. Every grudge is over a thing or a slight, never over anyone being hurt.

    How this list was compiled

Our own list of 42 first halves: words of stone, metal, fire and the tools of a craft, written on 2026-10-02. Every clan name the two name rows can spell (1,470 names) was built by script and screened that day: an English dictionary; every other list on this site and its sister sites; a rude-word list read across the join; exact page titles on English Wikipedia; and every word of every page title on 24 fan wikis of fantasy games and books (about 560,000 titles), so that a surname inside a title such as a character's full name is caught as well as a whole title. The half behind a match was cut: 30 first halves went, among them Iron, Silver, Bronze, Gold, Steel, Ember, Granite, Deep and Spark, which spell dwarf clans, characters and places of published games and books or names on other pages of this site, and 13 words were added and screened the same way. One more half, Plumb, came off afterward because a list of last names on this site holds it. No search of this kind is complete, so look a name up before you publish it. Licence: own work
