Choose which side shows
In each row, some names are human and the rest elven. Press New half-elf name until the two parts come from different sides, such as Mabel Starbough, or tap one part to lock it and press for the other.
Half elf last names, two kinds
The family names sit in two groups under the tool. The human ones are old English trade surnames, each with its trade: a chandler made candles, a bowyer bows. The elven ones are invented compounds of tree, water and light.
Tips
An elven first name on a human surname suggests a child raised in a human town.
Lock the family name and press for first names to name brothers and sisters.
Questions and answers
What is a half-elf?
In myth and fantasy, a half-elf is a being born of an elf and a human. Half-elves are sometimes presented as torn between the two worlds they live in, which is why these names mix the two.
Does a half-elf use a human name or an elven one?
That is up to the writer. A child raised in a human town might carry a plain human name, and one raised among elves an elven one. Both rows here hold both kinds so that you can choose.
Are the elven names from a book or a game?
No. They are invented for this page, and each was searched as a page title on Wikipedia and on fantasy fan wikis; the hits were cut. Search a name before you publish it.
Can I use this for any game?
Yes. No game is named and no rules are followed, so the names suit any tabletop game, video game or story that has half-elves in it.

How this list was compiled: 66 first names in two groups. The human names are old given names, each checked on 2026-10-02 to have an entry as a given name in English Wiktionary. The elven names are invented, our own work, screened by script that day and dropped on any hit: an English dictionary, United States name and surname files, GeoNames places, every list on this site and its sister sites, a rude-word list read inside the name (https://github.com/LDNOOBW/List-of-Dirty-Naughty-Obscene-and-Otherwise-Bad-Words), English Wikipedia page titles, and exact page titles on 12 fantasy fan wikis (lotr.fandom.com, forgottenrealms.fandom.com, elderscrolls.fandom.com, witcher.fandom.com, dragonage.fandom.com, gameofthrones.fandom.com, wot.fandom.com, harrypotter.fandom.com, wowpedia.fandom.com, pathfinder.fandom.com, criticalrole.fandom.com, zelda.fandom.com). On a second pass that day the names were also searched as exact page titles on 63 more fan wikis (starwars.fandom.com, warriors.fandom.com, finalfantasy.fandom.com and others), and against every page title of 16 fan wikis for a name used as one word of a title (cut) or one letter from the first word of a title (cut where that name is well known). Four old given names were also left out because, with surnames of the family row, they made the names of several people with a Wikipedia article; a pairing of two real names can still match a real person by chance. 12 candidates were cut (7 a name from published fiction, or one letter from it; 2 a fan wiki page title; 1 a rude word inside or across the join; 1 a Wikipedia page title; 1 taken out on a second reading), among them Raenor, Thalindra, Aravir, Maethor, Erevain. No list of fiction is complete, so search a name before you publish it. Licence: own work

How this list was compiled: 63 family names in two groups. The human ones are English trade surnames: each is in the surname file of the 2010 United States Census, and the trade was checked on 2026-10-02 in the English Wiktionary entry for the word. The elven ones are invented compounds of tree, water and light, screened as the elven first names were, and also against the elven family names printed in role-playing rule books. 12 candidates were cut (6 a fan wiki page title; 2 a Wikipedia page title; 1 a dictionary word; 1 a real first name or surname; 1 a rude word inside or across the join; 1 a real place), among them Dewlight, Thornbloom, Nightbloom, Gladewater, Fairwind, Starlily. Five trade surnames were also left out because, with given names of the first row, they made the names of several people with a Wikipedia article. Licence: own work
